Sorry for leaving you guys out on a limb, but I haven't got much done. I am waiting on money to get this thing going again. I did get the engine out of the garage and washed, it is much cleaner now. I also checked the glow plugs and there was only one good one.

I think I have put together a shopping list of what I need.

1. Connecting Rod
2. Rod Bearings
3. Main Bearings
4. Crank Ground
5. Head Gasket
6. Timing Chain?
7. 4 Glow Plugs
8. Piston Rings?
9. Misc. Gaskets
10. Oil
11. Coolant

Do you guys think I need anything else?

You could find a good engine for your parts cost. I know it's already been said.

Sounds like you're getting ready to get into the MB engine overhaul business!

No, I just got an incredible deal on them. Not to mention the other uses for an engine crane.

Today i went to O'reilly's to get the crank ground, they wanted 35 to inspect it then 80 for the actual grinding. I told them I would wait to see how much a used crank costs, and to research it. That new engine is looking more and more appealing, the only problem is locating one within a reasonable distance.

you can get another crank cheap enough.. .the trouble is balancing the entire assembly. It gets very expensive. You could just throw one in there... but keep a blank check in your glovebox.

I don't know, it finally sunk in that a new engine would really help. I can buy a good engine for ~500 bucks, sell the parts from the old for 300, and for 600 I have a running car that will go for many more miles. I am trying to locate an engine but finding one is going to be the hard part.

I think someone on this board put me into contact w/ Theo Costagavras in Chicago or thereabouts. He seemed to be in the line of buying parts W123's and parting them out. I almost bit on a 617.952 drivetrain, but I my trucker friend seemed sketchy, and I wasn't up for a Buffalo-Chicago round trip. I think his asking price was $600-700 for drivetrain and various other parts.

PM me for his email.

Thanks, but from my Location Chicago is pretty far away. I have located an engine in Memphis, TN which is a lot better. I just have to save up some money. I think I am going to start selling the good parts from the engine I have. Everything is good but the one connecting rod, and the crank is still pretty scored since it hasn't been ground yet. What do you guys think I can get out of the engine? I know pistons are ridiculously expensive, and all 5 of mine are still good.

Well guys, I think I've decided to get a different engine. It is a lot less work and will probably be cheaper in the long run. That means that I'm probably going to sell the parts from this one, so anybody that needs any turbo 617 parts I have everything but one connecting rod let me know. Look for my rebuild thread.
