That's great. When they're so stupid and ignorant about what they're doing that they let themselves get caught lying like that.

I asked a bout a 300D on craigslist. Guy described a nailing injector, said it persisted after 2 head gaskets, or head rebuilds, or something 'definately a noise in the top of the engine'.

I followed up w/ how to diagnose & fix nailing injector a while later. The reply, ouch, sorry, junked it.

A while later, thought I might need an engine (my own bad diagnosis. New front seal should fix my oil use, I'll know pretty soon if it does). Asked him where he junked it, he gave me the address. Said he had a valve cover and some bundts for sale. So ya think that cam's any good now? =8-0

After taking a 1991 Hyundai in for the tranny to get a check-up(60,000miles)
The guy said: "We've got some cars for sale that would be cheaper than fixing this one."

'96 Dodge Dakota (this was in 2001) with maybe 80,000 miles. Was stuttering when in overdrive at ~50mph. Indy mechanic said trans was shot, needed replaced.

I did a tuneup including plugs, wires, cap and rotor and the problem went away. I traded the truck in last December with 222,000+ miles and the original trans.

98 dodge caravan.. it wouln' start/crank sometimes. The dealer charged $3000 in repairs that did not fix the problem and would not give our money back, only a discount on a $2000 ECU. I got an ECU from the junkyard for $50 that fixed the problem.

A good friend of my mom is having this issue with her 1999 Lexus Es300, its been back and forth to dealer for CK Engine and TRAC light. Now latest quote was 3600.00 to replace Catalytic Converter. I told her online there are replacement ones for less than 300.00. I also asked her to stay away from dealer and find a good independent in the area, or just go to Toyota dealer as its basically a dressed up Camry.

replace the backup-neutral switch to correct a single (of the two) intermittant backup light problem on my volvo that wasn't bulb related.

Ended up being an intermittant contact with the flex card used in the volvo taillight system (a stupid design if I ever saw one).

friends of ours recently had their silhouette to a local rip off artist who told them it needed a head gasket, which would run them ~2500
one intake gasket later and the vehicle was fine. final cost, everything included - 575 (we even took the slack outta the johnson rod and topped off the headlight fluid)

Volvo's have terrible lighting systems. I believe there was a recall on my 98 V70 once.

Worst diagnosis, A missing piston!!! Its was from a 300D N/A part car, we pulled out the engine and send it to a german mech to inspect the engine and see what's needed, and its turns out the PO took out a piston, hastly place every thing back to the engine timming chain was toasted (broke a few links) and not attached (thx goodness we did not start that engine), and found a few bolts in the oil pan, so we took back the engine, send it to another friend, bought the piston and found a brand new but used timming chain and within hours (12 hours later) got it all hooked up the engine started and ran like a champ now the engine sits in a container storage for feature engine transplant....

Forgot one. Wife took her car to Kia dealer. He said she needed a new ABS Computer for about $900 + Labor. It was the speed pick up in rear end for $50. I did the work so labor was free.

One of the reasons I donated my 240D for an enduro. My friend hated the lites too, but did real well in the race with it. Took a hit after it was stuck in the mud tho. Too bad.
