Always at morning cold start
"ALWAYS" at morning cold start, and wait until I hear the relay CLUNK open before cranking.
NEVER, After the engine temperature is 40C or higher. Have a great day.

I just go by the light on the first turn of the key. I crank when the light turns out, and everything seems to turn out alright as long as the system is actually working. Cold starts in the new parts car are heavenly.

It never gets cold enough in western WA to require a glow longer than the light indicates. One day this winter when it got down into the teens the engine stumbled once when I started it just after the light went out. After that one little cough it was fine.
I start it like a gasser when the engine is warm; it never skips a beat. Manual says that's what you should do.

Always pre-glow before starting... especially if you do not like replacing the starter!

Here on the west coast, Monterey Bay area our winters are not too bad. I usually wait until the relay clunks and then start.
Once in a while Dec thru Feb the coldest part of winter it can get down to 30 and the high 20`s. I might use the block heater to help the starter, and still glow once until the relay clunks. In the warmer times of the year I usually start after the light goes out. most times after it has warmed up and has sat for an hour or so it starts w/o any glow. Charlie

300D-wait for the light to go out, then start. If the engine's already warm, I skip the waiting.
240D-Has a manual glow switch, and how long I glow depends on temperature. In warm weather, I do a 30 second glow before starting. Same if it's been plugged in for a few hours or more. If it's colder and hasn't been plugged in, I'll go 45, 60, or 90 seconds before starting.

Well I guess I make 3. I rarely drive my wife's car, but the other day I did and gave it the same seat belt glow that I give my car.

I assume by pre-glow, you mean longer than after the light goes out. That's what I based my answer on. Unless the engine is hot and was only recently shut off, why would anyone not glow the engine?

I always glow for 5 seconds when the engine is cold and not at all when the coolant is above 60*C.

![]() I guess I don't understand what your definition of "pre-glow" is? There is either "glowing," or, not glowing.," irregardless/independent of the ambient temperature.

I always glow, winter, summer, unless I just turn the car off for a minute and it was at operating temp.
That's how it is here in South Texas, you have to glow since the engine cools down so quickly , especially in midday summer, the engine might cool down from 80*C to 79*C in 4 hours - have to be careful about these things. Reality is if I always glow - cars starts like turning on a light - I like that 1 second on the starter. We are talking about pre as in antecedent as opposed to later model highfalutin cars that have some kind of after-glow - that is post as in succedent. Yes, I do pre-glow the volvo 240 ...
