EMP

Might get the alternator semiconductor regulator and/or rectifier diodes in alt...also filaments in bulbs....
I have seen bulbs that were turned off get popped by a close lightning strike....

An EMP in close proximity would induce high voltages in all of an car's wiring and metal chassis. If the pulse is sustained long enough, every light bulb, electric motor, alternator and semiconductor would be damaged.

The fault tree for a diesel car subjected to a high level and long lasting EMP is unknown. I believe there were some EMP "bombs" used in Yugoslavia in the 90s. I can't remember reading about the EMP vs diesels.

A EMP "gun" is used some some police to stop modern cars, I don't think it would have enough power to destroy low impedance devices, such as starters and light bulbs, but it would toast unhardened semiconductors, under certain circumstances.

You can purchase a lead foil to wrap ecm's,and other sensitive controls, like military Hummers.

If you were lucky enough to have vehicle running after an emp I guarantee someone in a uniform with a gun would seize it from you immediately...or someone without the uniform with a gun.
