No, not talking the shims that set preload...

And, both the 380SEL (W126) and my 300SD (W116) use the same flex disc (126 41 00 215) which means the 380 has the small diesel yoke pattern.

The axle shims are specific to each diff/stub combo. FSM is very vague regarding the shims. IIRC it just states the clips need to be tight.

Also, early axles were machined "left" and "right" such that gear oil would be drawn inward.

Correct....

The W126 early axle was a push-in and the later was a bolt-on with a flanged stub shaft. However, both Gen I W126 and W116 are the same OAL....

This is turning out to be an easy swap. The diff is very easy to work on, quite robust in design and in remarkable shape for the mileage!!!!

Yesterday, I got the housing cleaned up. We have a non-aqueous (water based) solvent from Safety-Clean that is heated an cleans very well, but will quickly rust parts if left soaking for too long.

After drying everything off, I bead blasted the housing, flanges and yoke and painted them semi-gloss black.

Thus far, the bearings and everything else looks good. I only wish it was an LSD, but the diff does indeed appear to be in very good shape.

I ordered up a new nut, pinion seal, (2) bearing retainer 'O' rings and (2) axle seals from my MBZ dealer for less than $30.00.

I will proceed with assembly this week...

Should have a very quiet W116 3.07:1 out of the car next week.

I know!

Yesterday I was pressed with shop projects, so I had to squeeze in time for the diff on lunch and my two breaks.

I did paint the drain plug orange to give it a halloween style of sorts...

Progress:

The 2.47:1 axle after cleaning, shown with the R107 Speedo for proper calibration. All of the seals to re-seal the diff were only $38.00 from Mercedes-Benz....

Differences in V8 & Diesel Yoke:

FYI,

The Diesel Yoke measures 3-1/8" across and the V8 Yoke measures 3-3/4" across....

Pitfalls:

The swap just got complicated...

Forum member johnhef swapped a 3.07 from a 73 450SE into his 1983 500SEC, which came with 2.24:1 gears. The swap is chronicled here:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/performance-paddock/242313-116-126-differential-swap-pics.html

However, even though his donor 3.07:1 diff is marked '116,' it is of the larger case variety, which is 8" wide from bearing flange to bearing flange. The diff in my W116 (1978 300SD) is a smaller, 7" wide case and is marked '115.'

In theory, this would require 1" shorter axles. The axles in John's swap were the same length because both differentials were of the large case (large ring gear) variety, despite a significant difference in axle rations....

Right you are!!!!!

Now that the 3.07 is clean ( a 115 diff actually according to the markings) I can see it is much smaller...
