The 2.47 has a ring gear diameter of 210mm, the 2.88 has a ring gear diameter of 185mm. All other dimensions of the two series are proportional. Hence, the 185 is narrower than the 210, and the axle shafts for the 185 are longer when used in any given chassis. Further, Gen 2 W126 inboard CV joints are of the bolt-on "Lobro" pattern, while the older style MB tripod joint was retained at the outboard ends. Flex discs are of different diameters. There is, however, an area of commonality; the mounting bolt pattern to the sub-frame, and the rear mount. Quick identification can be made by the location of the vent; the 210 vent is on the main casting, the 185's is on the rear cover.
The 3.07 diff in my W116 is the same width as the 2.47 W126 gen 1 diff that I have in the garage. The W126 diff also has the 'slip-in' inner CV joint and not the 'bolt-on' style found on the gen 2 W126's.

Both my W116 (3.07) diff and my W126 (2.47 diff) have vents in the same location on the main casting.

How many bolts on the lateral (side) covers/bearing housings, on each of the two diffs?

I forget now, but they both have the same number of bolts. I did check this, at one point, but, alas, I did not write it down. I can say that the W116 diff is marked '116' on these 'covers' and the W126 diff is marked '126' respectively...

If indeed, they both have eight bolts (which the 126/2.47 diff will have), then both have 210mm ring gears, and are in the same series. Other than the pinion flange, the other areas which may be different are the diameters of the stub axles in the carrier and the side seals. Remove one axle (if installed) from the 2.47 and measure those diameters. To check those diameters of the diff now installed, the rear cover can be removed in the car, a c-clip pulled from one axle, and the axle slid out far enough to measure the corresponding diameters on it.

If the 116 axles have the same diameters as the 126, and for reasons of length you decide to retain the 116 axles, the end play of the stub axles in the diff will have to be re-set. There are selective shim washers that slide over the shaft inboard of the seal surface, that are used to set the end play. The manual says: "No noticeable end play should occur; the locking ring (c-clip) should still rotate in groove."

Based on this chart, I have this: 1978–1980, 300SD, OM617.950, 3.07, 1.1 Liter, 185mm

And plan to install this: 1984-1985, 500 SE, M117.963 5.0L V8, 2.47, 1.3 Liter, 210mm

Yet both have 8 bolt carrier bearing flanges!

Is there a difference in the width of these two differentials?

W116 Axle Measurements Needed:

My W126 Differential (2.47:1) has slip in, stub-axles with a sealing surface that measues .771” in diameter. Each spider gear has a .115” shim between the gear and the stub axle. The bearing surface of the stub axle, that slips into the spider gear is .260” in diameter. The length of the stub axle extends 2-3/4” above the sealing surface.

Can someone measure these things on a known W116 axle so I can try and figure out where I am????

Thanks….

I think you are going to be better off measuring what you need yourself - I get the impression that shims are specific to the individual differential; because of manufacturing tollerances you'll need a shim that fits the gap you have won't you?

(Or have I totally misunderstood the question?)

The 'cans' on the W116 inner CV joints are much larger than the ones that came out of the W126 differential. Since I drive this daily, I can't really tear it down and measure it.
