Electrical Smarties, help me wire some running lights
I would like to wire up the city light bulbs in my euro lights to act as daytime running lights. I would like them to be on when the ignition is on but the headlights are off. When the headlights are turned on I would like them to turn off. Is there any way I can easily do this with out using two relays?

Help us to help you--do the city lights have a separate ground or do they ground through the same ground the headlights use?

How many watts are the city lights? I thought they looked kind of like flashlight bulbs? If those are the ones I'm thinking of, then just hook them directly to an ignition source, and connect a relay in between activated by the headlights to cut them off.

It can be done with a single relay but keep in mind the current draw requirement for the city lights. IIRC, a 10% buffer is sufficient for resistive. Find the feeder side of a fuse that is powered with Key ON. Run power for the city lights through the Normally Closed contacts of the relay from the fuse box. Then go to the fuse for the headlights and connect to the power side of the relay. Connect the ground side of the relay to chassis and you should be good.

I hotwired to a fuse on my car. Not elgant but worked. Unhooked it again recently, I am going to redo this properly (running wire with loom).

I have wires running to pin 3, I just need to hook them up. The stock bulbs are 4 watts each, but I am planning to use these bulbs which are made up of 3 LEDs.
![]() I think you guys are right, hook them to a switched power source and add a normally closed relay with the switch wire running to the headlights. I'll let you know how it works. Thanks

It looks like you might have it covered, but here's my help anyway
![]() Go to radio shack and get a SPDT automotive relay. Connect switched +12v from the fuse box or wherever to terminal 30, and connect the power going to the light to terminal 87a. Connect the light's ground to ground. Tap the headlight's power wire and connect it to terminal 85, connect terminal 86 to ground. If you happen to have another light that you want to come on with your headlights, you can connect that to terminal 87. Otherwise, it would be best to cover it with something because it'll be hot whenever the headlights are on. Good luck, I'm interested to know how those LED's look. ![]() (Image from here: http://www.the12volt.com/relays/relays.asp)

I got them wired up like pizzachef suggested. I used the sunroof/rear power seat for the switched source and the parking lights for the relay coil input. Here is the relay inegrated into the fuse box (the blue one) and the stock light output.

Here is the LED light output. The light it puts out kind of blends into the sun's reflection. The LEDs make more of a point of light, where the stock bulbs light up the whole reflector. I do like the color the LEDs put out (sort of like those angel eyes newer BMWs have) and I think they should have a longer life span which will be good since they will be on almost all the time the car is being driven.

The LED color is kind of a "modern" look..do they light up enough to be seen on the road? Maybe on an overcast day it makes more of a difference. You should have lots of those when fall comes

One Question.
To wiper or not to wiper with Euros? That is the question.
