Arrow Engine Oil Spec from MB 617 Engine is Very Liberal.......

On my 1979 300SD I see that the original as designed specification from Mercedes Benz for Engine Oil Consumption is:
262 Miles per US Qt

This is 3.82 qts per 1000 Miles.

This appears very liberal. Interpretations and comments welcomed????

Most engines do way better than this but why did MB find it necessary to publish this number in their FSM without any footnotes or qualifications......

Say a nice lady bought a new car back in 1979 and it consumed that amount there would be a creamed engine in no time flat. She would never think of checking her oil that frequently???

It gives them a lot more latitude in dealing with warranty claims.

It's the same argument I have about "excessive" timing chain stretch, with offset keys allowing correction of 10 degrees of stretch. I think 10 degrees is excessive, but MB would rather put it off until it's out of warranty.

That doesn't sound right......the car would have never come close to meeting emission standards with consumption like that.

None of the 617's I've seen, service, or own, use even a quart between 4,000 mile changes. Two of them use nearly none, and my SD and my dad's '83SD use about 3/4 of a quart per 4k.

I will repeat......

It is in the Factory Service Manual for Model 116.120 (300 SD). Look at Section 00-020 Page 16 named 'Technical Data'.

This is it verbatim:

"Engine Oil Consumption ltr./100km (miles/US qt.) 0.25 (262)"

If this is correct, the 350k engine I picked up cheap and put in my car last year (now has 370k+ on it) lovingly named Valdez 2 by my mechanic friend who sold it to me, is still in spec!

Let me put it this way, its name has meaning behind it!

but it does run really strong! and I'm slowly patching its leaks.

262 miles is not liberal enough, its 235mi/qt.

From the FSM 040/4 on the 617.952:

I agree the spec is there to reduce warranty costs. Even MB's current engines allow a very high oil consumption rate, especially during break-in.

My 240's engine uses less than 1qt/2000mi.

Lightbulb Inside the psyche of MB..........

The argument that it is there because of warranty holds no water because there never is a compelling reason for MB to quote these specs. They could have remained silent on this spec. It does risk them losing some credibility.....but then again they always greatly surpassed the silly number. If it is for CYA I do not believe they would stiff a new owner by saying....see, we are within spec. MB was a very serious Company prior to Chrysler at any rate. I only know them up to that.

Do we have any Psychologist/Psychiatrist on board here??? There is some pathology worth pursuing............

I think i seen a ford truck or mustang come in before and they had do the whole oil consumption testing pia trying keep up with that i'm thinking they're spec was 1qt/800 miles was within spec this being a engine with 5qt of oil if u consider we have 8qt and about 1/2 the pistons valves etc. as the v8 that's kinda interesting spec. Most of all my euro diesels have gotten about 1qt/1000

However considering these specs were done some 25 years ago i wonder? Does MB even have they're own engine oil? I dont have my manual handy but doesnt it just specifiy SD/CD or something with wide ranging visc. like vw's of the era?

oil loss due to evaporation

One thing people forget is that part of the new oil evaporates when heated, light ends and breakdown and evaporation losses, it is measured by ASTM method D5800 or Noaak test and it amounts to on average ~10% mass loss or ~ 11% volume loss and it can be as high as 15 % depending on oil viscosity and whether synthetic or mineral. Light weight mineral oil having the highest % loss. This is not burning or leaking.
