Got my 300D manual flywheel.

I finally got my flywheel to do the manual conversion on the 300D Saturday. It's a thing of beauty. I can now get started on the conversion and do it right. It looks great. It only has a little surface rust on the clutch surface but it looks like it'll clean up with just some light sand paper. The surface checks out flat with a straight edge and there's no discoloration, cracks or even grooves. The ring gear looks perfect. I'll have it balanced just to be sure.
I can't wait to get started.
What's odd about the shipping is that it started out by DHL in Germany but when it got here in the US it was delivered by the USPS. How strange is that?

Not strange at all. DHL was a miserable failure in the USA but has moderate success in Europe.

Don't forget to weigh it, I don't think we have ever gotten an actual number from anyone before.

I thought it did. It certainly arrived quickly. I got it less than 10 days.
I'll see if I can weigh it.

ooops, I had bad memory. If you have trouble finding the right outfit for the balancing/offbalance marks you can send it to Equipoise Balancing Lab in Longmont Co. I'm gonna check out Dynamic Balancing Dallas Tx.

I was gonna say 38#.

Don't forget you don't just balance it you must match it to the flywheel from your engine. There is a good chance neutral will work but there is also a 20 or 25% chance its balanced to the crank. If you have one of those and don't match balance it will shake your teeth out!

Good luck.

You'll probably need to have the driveshaft rebuilt longer. The 123 pedal cluster I am told will work with a little modification.

I would love an early sd with a stick myself.

Like Tom said....you need to study the FSM concerning the flywheels balancing... not just go with neutral automatically... it talks about how to match it up... although you don't have something to match to... but you should read the warnings and procedures before putting it all together..or paying for machine work..

I have a feeling neutral will probably work. I had the bare engine running on a pallet before I put it in my car. It ran smooth all by itself without a torque converter attached to the flywheel.

It is your car...and we have duly referenced the FSM warnings and the vibrations which some others have wound up with on this type conversion...
That is about all we can do...

The torque converter is naturally balanced by the fluid inside. The flex plate on the engine isn't.

I'm well aware of the FSM warnings, but how many members made the conversion with a true 617 manual flywheel? There's probably no known method of match balancing an automatic flywheel against a manual flywheel because of the weight differences. Perhaps the closest way to attempt this would be to attach a full torque converter to the automatic flywheel and then matching it against the manual flywheel? This probably wouldn't be possible.
I'm probably going to just try to balance my manual flywheel and hope it turns out good.

The torque converter plays no part in balance and overall weight difference makes no difference. What matters is how much weight is removed and where in relation to #1 TDC.
