SL Forum Vs. Diesel Forum

IMHO, Just an observation, I find that the diesel forum has far more knowledgeable gearheads than the SL forum members who I imagine pay others more often to do their mechanical work vs doing it themselves. When I post on the diesel forum, I always get plenty of great assistance knowledge and help from members - just my two cents

I am going out on a limb here, but I do not believe that any of the well kept trophy wifes who drive SL's are lurking in the background here.

Just my experience & circle of friends.

If there were diesel SLs that wouldn’t be true.

Diesels are easier to be a gearhead with.

As for the 81 and later 107s at least, the V8s are a PITA and zero fun to work on.

I guess the Dieselheads are more of a DIY type of community. We have the mostly older cars that need lots of attention. I have seen some good posts about 107 issues in the SL forum (I lurk there once in a while as I really, really want one )

I also think that the 107 and newer SLs are harder bodies to work on with the engine kind of crammed in there. Probably makes more people just take it someplace for everything bigger than oil changes.

Aren't there a couple of OM 617 powered ones owned by forum members?

I would like an OM603 powered one...

Oh no...don't give us any ideas!! I would loooove a diesel R107, judging from the guy's posts it doesn't look too hard for an engine swap. Thanks for the link, very good read

You are correct in your observation.

It takes intelligence to realize the superiority of the Mercedes-Benz diesel-powered cars over their gasser models. Some hapless souls just don't get it.....not that there's anything wrong with it.

I count myself among the informed and intelligent MB diesel owners.

If it aint a diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz, chances are I wouldn't own it......at any price.

Yep, and you have this irrepressible need to always be reminding folks about it.
Calling Dr. Freud.......

Look, lets just all admit it and make Joe's life so much easier: "Joe is sooo much smarter than the rest of us". Ask him, he certainly never misses an opportunity to tell us.

He was out and amongst the rest of us for a month or so a while back, but he is back to guarding his bridge again......

Its something that most of us know is bad form to say, whatever we might believe in our heads.

They are both great cars. Why not own one of each?

I own one of each (okay, just sold my w123 for a w126, but you get the idea). The w123 is much easier to work on and not nearly as "intimidating" as the r107.
