I have to wonder what the shops are smoking, to be quoting $500/cylinder!
The last I looked, the sleeves were ~$20 per cylinder. Admittedly that's just the part, and will require the work to install and then machine it flush with the top of the block, but I suspect that if you bring a competent machine shop a bare block and a few sleeves, the price should be back in a sane range. Maybe $500 for the work total? The last time I had machine work done, I was getting a head straightened and welded (warped aluminum head with cracks between valves on a gasser) and I was out the door complete for $250. I know it's a little different work being done, but that per cylinder quote strikes me as far out of line for the work actually required. Maybe they were thinking that they'd be machining the current cylinders and installing a repair sleeve, rather than removing a sleeve and replacing it?

Outrageous Price per Cylinder?
I agree with the gentleman who asked what they were smoking
You would probably have to bring in the short block to a machine shop, have them install the new sleeves, and plane the top of the block . . . then put in the ring kit, have the head also planed and rebuilt. Otherwise . . . think it would be easier all the way around to get a good junk yard motor. |

I agree that price is way too high. I bet the shop saw the MB star and vastly inflated the price.
