Arrow Engine Oil Spec from MB 617 Engine is Very Liberal.......

On my 1979 300SD I see that the original as designed specification from Mercedes Benz for Engine Oil Consumption is:
262 Miles per US Qt

This is 3.82 qts per 1000 Miles.

This appears very liberal. Interpretations and comments welcomed????

Most engines do way better than this but why did MB find it necessary to publish this number in their FSM without any footnotes or qualifications......

Say a nice lady bought a new car back in 1979 and it consumed that amount there would be a creamed engine in no time flat. She would never think of checking her oil that frequently???
