Power Steering Leak

The steering box on my 1982 300D is leaking badly (1qt/day) from the seal located on the bottom of the box, where the arm comes out and then connects to the tie rod, etc.

Can this be repaired?

As a quick fix, would disabling the power steering pump help or hurt me?
