Missing Hose from evaporator box? 83 300TD

While replacing the leg-room flap vacuum actuator I noticed that there seems to be a missing hose coming from the evaporator box to the center of the transmission hump under the dash. See photos. Can anyone confirm this? While I have access I would like to replace it if need be. A/C is not currently working but is on to fix list (low down on it since it is usually not too hot here in Astoria). Thanks for your help,
Jim

That's the Evaporator drain hose. MB put in a foam hose there that deteriorates over time and then when you use your A/C, it leaks water all over your floor.

Just get a short rubber hose in there to replace it.

you dont need it unless you fix your A/c. if you do fix your A/c you'll definitely need it otherwise you're going to have a little lake on your floor

If you look through my thread:

I used a flexible dishwasher drain hose from Lowes when I overhauled/changed the AC on the car. Good Luck getting it on there!!! You will see what I mean.

Seconded on that strategy. I don't have working A/C (previous owner ripped most of it out). I replaced that piece on my car mostly to fill the gap and to make sure no moisture/vermin came in through that hole.

Here's the piece daw_two used (picture link derived from his thread):

Here's the one I used:

Exclamation Evap. Drain Hose

Jim ;

Read that other thread and go to Lowe's , get the rubber hose and install it .

Look up also " cleaning the AC Evaporator " and follow the various ideas AFTER you've installed a rain hose else the floors will get all wet and stinky and cause rust (even in Los Angeles) .

I removed my heat fan motor and used a garden hose to flush out lots of crud accumulated in the evaporator matrix , the increased volume of air out the dash vents is amazing and I don't think it's anywhere near fully clean yet .

Ditto. Read my post

There is just enough room to get a hand in there without removing the carpeted panel. Easier if you work from both sides.

I used "Femco PDWC-100" dishwasher hose adapter from Home Depot.

Remove the the plastic twisty on there now and what is left of the original foam tube. What a silly design. The Exquisite German Engineers must have been working the other shift.

Thanks for the excellent advice. I think a friend has one of those connectors kicking around as he just put in a dishwasher but didn't need that adapter. I have the carpet pulled back so access shouldn't be too horrible.

There are a lot of threads on this AC leak problem

MB used a foam tube with a wire spring wrapped inside it, and wrapped on the out side with a white plastic if I remember right.
They usually deteriorate and get mushy and leak after 15 - 20 yrs. mine did and I had water in the R/R pass foot well. carper soaked until I figured what was going on. ( pre MBShop Forum Days)

Remove the carpet on the Pass side so you can see under the A/C. You will see the mushie foam tube mess.

there are a lot of write up using the cut off top of a coke bottle and fitting it in there, with the threaded part in the hump.
I think it was JIMMYL that did it and had pictures.

I used a piece of hose, but expect to loose a pound of flesh in the process. not a lot of room.

here is a thread JimmyL did a few yrs back using the top of a Soda bottle.

I've sprung a leak, evaporator drain hose...

Sorry to resurrect this slightly old (and well covered topic, I searched the forum and found lots of useful info - thanks to all on this great resource).

But I'm a new to my 82 300d. While fixing something in my glove box, I had it removed and noticed that the same material of foam hose was detached/deteriorated. Easy to replace. Searching this fine resource I'm learning I should address the evaporator drain as well, as I plan and perhaps getting AC up and running. My understanding is the the 82 has one drain tube/hole. My question is, HOW much of the interior do I need to disassemble to access this section? I haven't been in there yet, so all of the photos are showing an area that I'm not familiar with.

the carpet, the panel in the inside footwell - do I need to remove anything in the center console/ashtray/switchplate/radio area?

thanks for any tips or if there is a thread with more detail.

-andrew
