everyone,

That was awesome. It all came apart like clockwork as I was very careful except one little clip behind the ignition side black panel broke at the very end which I was irritated about but its all brittle stuff being 22 years old I guess. The nest was huge and messy! I think I got all of them now as the smell has improved a ton with all of the panels removed. I am going to clean the ones that are not past the point of cleaning. This panel was pretty dirty on the underneath side where the nest was. There is a type of foam plastic stuff which I may be able to cut out the bad stuff then clean, then sun, then ozone the heck out of it. I may have to track another one down at a yard or a parts store. Maybe I wont have to sell the car now!! I smelled around and I think and hope there are no more in the a/c or dash??!!Now just getting them back together as it always seems its easier to remove than replace!!

Pull the cluster out, check for more nest and for chewed wire. The glovebox is also fairly easy to remove, look behind there and over the center vents, be sure vacuum lines aren't chewed also.

Might save you a fire, or just lots of vacuum-system troubleshooting.

You are fortunate that the nest/smell was (apparently) the limit of the damage. My next-door neighbor had a nice Jag given her by her lawyer brother; the rats got into it earlier this year (we are out in the country) and chewed up four main wiring harnesses. The mechanic said $14,000 minimum to take the car all apart and replace so they had to scrap the car. Pity, the car was in primo shape except for being a Jag. [The neighbors are not mechanically inclined -- no way they could do the work themselves.]
