wheel Alignment 240D

My 1983 240d Is in need of a wheel alignment. Is Mercedes the only place to have it done properly? I had it done with a 4 wheel computer once and it was not good. Any comments or help. Thanks
AG

There is nothing magic about alignment of the 123 car.

Alignment is something that can be accomplished without a $30,000 alignment system as long as the person doing the alignment knows what he's doing.

Unless the car has been in an accident, the only thing that you really need to worry about is just setting the toe on zero. That is, of course, assuming that all joints and linkage points are in good condition.

The manufacturer's procedure calls for a special preload bar that simulates the forces acting on the front wheels while driving at highway speed. The alignment can be done without it, but it takes some fudging of the factory specs to account for the absence of the preload bar.

As long as the camber isn't extreme and the toe is pretty close to zero, you should get decent driving characteristics and tire wear. You can do it with some jackstands, string, and a tape measure.

This may be negative but I do not see the point in Wheel Alignment if the Upper and Lower Control Arm Bushings are the Originals (if you have done this already disregard everything). If they have not been replace previously it is a bunch of old stiff rotting rubber just waiting to fall apart.

I owned my Car that had good alignment when I bought it for a little over a year; after which over the course of 3 days my front wheels were tilting inwards at the top and tires starting to wear on the inside bottom edges.
When I bought the car the suspension bushings were on barrowed time.
