dumb question: Where's the block heater?
Hey guys...
So, I just moved my sweet little 82 240D from California to Minnesota. And it's October 11th and it already snowed. I'm pretty much ready for the cold- new glow plugs, new battery, new tires. However, the guy I bought the car from said there was a block heater in it...but I have no idea where to look. I don't see any obvious plugs, and I don't have any idea where the thing hooks in. Help me out? Thanks! Deanna

Block heater is on right side of the block above the starter and under the manifold. Cord is usually on the right of engine at the front somewhere.

It's low on the right (passenger's) side of the engine about in the middle from front to back. Look for something with a wire or just electrical connections screwed into the block.

Right side of engine, should be just forward of the starter. If it has a cord, check it for flexibility and intact insulation all the way back to the block. Mine looked flexible and usable on one end but was shot on the part near the block. The cord is normally zip-tied near the radiator.

A plug should be visible when you open the hood, in front of the radiator.

It's also possible that the seller was mistaken -- 123 diesels did not come from the factory with block heaters. New owners had one year to request block heater installation free from their dealer but cars in warm climates generally didn't get them. for example, my new-in-California '85 300D did not. I installed a lower radiator hose heater instead for occasional trips to snow country. Thank the maker, my last winter in Minnesota was 1967-68, while I was too young to know better.

You can also check for an aftermarket model. Mine had an aftermarket one (despite being originally a Massachusetts car - why on earth didn't they get a factory one?).
It basically was a heater / pump with coolant hoses going to and from it. I'm sure there were various places to mount it, but mine was on the passenger side, near the front of the engine compartment.

When I was at Chad's GTG I asked Squabble about the block heater and sadly mine doesn't have one.
I have the original coupon book that the first owner had and the block heater coupon is long missing. On the flipside my home made block heater is a tin foil charcoal grill.
