I have lined up different halves using the existing marks and never had vibrations. There may be no need to rebalance the whole thing. Or I might have just been lucky.

That's right. Align the two shafts so that the one nub is directly in between the two on the other shaft .

Not to revive an old thread, but I just got the propshaft for my 617 swap, but I only grabbed the front part and left the back part of the driveshaft with the Euro 300TD in the junkyard. Should I go back and grab the rear part? The car is a 1980 just like my 240D. You guys mentioned the it was in 1982 where they makred them?
Again, sorry for digging up an old thread, but this one was especially informative to what I am doing

Generally speaking it is best to keep the two parts together. If the other part hasn't got a factory mark on it however the "safety" has gone - unless you dutifully marked the propshaft in the scrap yard (and then wandered off with only the front half)...
...oh hang about the length of the shaft is different for a 300D and a 240D if I remember correctly...

I did the same thing on my CD when I did the carrier bearing. Didn't know any better. Now when I accelerate hard, it shakes pretty bad at about 5mph. That's the only time I notice. If I can't get it to a driveshaft shop, maybe it's worth it to pull it and try putting it back in differently. Worth a shot, eh?
