The metric website is real interesting. How do I tell if I have a 602.962 short block or long block?

A long block is the entire engine, a short block is just the "bottom end," not including the head, etc.

That's what happens when you get cheap.
Problem is the newest 617 is 25 years old. Its not like they just stopped making them and you can get 4 year old 30k mile motors out of wrecked cars.

I'm thinking that someone should start looking into the feasibility of Sprinter engine conversions....

Exactly, we have reached the point where we are going to have to pay for reman engines. It will not be long before all the used parts disappear.

Yep, thankfully Mercedes is very good with parts support.

All these cars are getting old, the marginal ones are getting thinned out. I see it now, guys are moving onto the W124's and W210's since they are getting cheap. When I first signed up for this forum no one had 210's and W124's were rare. It was all W123.

Yup, it's just a matter of time until all the crappy W123s are off the road.

That's an accomplishment, for sure.

I'm curious if you are able to keep your repair and maintenance costs (exclusive of fuel and oil) to $.10/mile? You spend quite a bit for parts and labor, but you also put up some big numbers on the odometer.

I'm guessing it's more like $.15 because I haven't done much myself lately. I just spent about $3500 on a bunch of work (injectors, valve adjustment, rear springs and shocks, some front end work, tranny service, speedo cable, front calipers, two tires, etc.). I'm being pretty proactive about maintenance/repairs because I really don't want to get stuck someplace far from home. I'm on track to drive about 50K this year, so it spreads out the expenses.

My total, including fuel/oil, is somewhere around $.25-.30, but the current GAO/IRS rate is $.55 so I'm still doing OK.

That is still OK..........fuel is usually $.10..........depreciation is now nill.........insurance is probably $.04 so you've got a total of about $.30 for everything.

Mine run about $.35 because I factor in about $.10 for depreciation. Each of them (2) goes about 10K per year.

I think it's safe to say mine is fully depreciated.

Depreciation is probably the biggest single factor if you are going to put big miles on a late model car. I assume that is most of the government's $.55 allowance.

Definitely.

The average sedan can easily lose $5K per year.........equating to $.33 for 15K miles.

These folks might not quite squeak in below the $.55 allowance.

If they buy a $hitbox, they'll never make it. I think I once figured that it costs about $.75 to run an Expedition...........including everything..........for 15K miles per year.

Yeah I know a guy who is forced by his company to buy pretty new cars every two years. I forget the rules they are complicated. I think it has to be no older than 3 or 4 years old and a 4 door sedan. He drives about 40k a year.

He is probably damn near the .55 cent a mile write off with his new Camry, when you factor everything in.

The scary part is that I know a lot of people who think nothing of running trucks like that 15k-20k a year. They certainly don't make the money to support it either.
