they used to make a real thick and cheep grease that you could actually see string in it. If that could be found I think that it might work the best. It was called chassis grease and real thick.

ok, reviving an older thread, but searching is not getting me anywhere...
the small gear on my SD odo is bad, I got a new set of the three gears, and am attempting to replace them, but the small one has a brass hub, and appears to be pressed on...
any idea how to get it off, so I can put the new one on? I've never seen a puller that would handle something so small. and pressing it off, against the plastic frame is not going to work.
all help appreciated!

Late night epiphany got me thinking, and I pulled out the soldering iron, bubbled a bit of solder on it, and then heated up the brass hub. it popped right off.
the new plastic gear slid on smoothly, and everything went back together with ease.
here's hoping I got the thing together right, we'll see in the morning if it works!
goodnight!

I use a pair of side cutters to split the brass. Do not try to pry it off.

Put some heavy grease on the gears or they will make noise.

Good luck
Robert

I was reading that about the grease, and will put some on when I pull it all apart to fix the tach.
the trip odo worked fine, but the master odo would not advance much beyond 4 or 5 miles today... I pulled it all apart, and found I had the cover on a tad off, and missed the plastic pin. letting the cover sit cockeyed, kept the master gear from making contact...
oops. but all is well now, and I'm counting my miles again!

Great to hear about the grease on the gears. When I did mine I coudn't find any answer for the clicking noise but it sure is annoying. I'll try greasing the gears!
