I was going to post the same thing, but I thought I would try something new and be nice.
But since you brought it up......

Can you add it yourself and reset the system without SDS?

I'm not sure, but I think the dealer needs to reset the system. I believe this restriction was required to meet EPA requirements (so people couldn't override the system).

In that case, it's going to cost a lot more than $32 for that gallon if juice.

Well, it seems a little silly to try to save negligible money after spending a big chunk of change on the car. It sounds like we are talking about the average person's starbucks coffee budget here.

I expect this will be more of an issue when these cars are older and cheaper.

I believe it's a several gallon container that's refilled pretty infrequently. I assume you will pay dealer rates for the service, probably combined with periodic dealer maintenance.

What happens when you run out of cat pee in the middle of nowhere, where there are no dealers. Between Fairbanks and Prudhoe Bay, for example? Call the 800 number??

I think you get something like 20 more starts after the system tells you that it's time for service, then you call for a tow. The parts guys at my local dealer told me that they have already had one towed in because the owner ignored the warning.

A penny saved is a penny earned even for the richies who drive their cars.

Then they should drive something else, this is part of the cost of ownership.

if you have that much urea in your pee you need to goto the emergency room because you're about to die!

put the sensor in a small bottle of fluid and remove the rest of the system.

There are sensors that monitor the exhaust gasses too, its not quite that simple of a system.
