OK, Ill do that before hitting the hay. On another note, should something be used as an adhesive or sealant in the track, or between the different pieces? When I did the verticals on my rear quarters, there was remains of something that looked like a trim adhesive. pretty dried out, but it was there. I didnt put anything new, and it didnt really come off, so I left it as-was, and the strips stay in there perfect... But these seals are arguably more important and more likely to see water, so it may make sense to do another step...

the ebay site says you need to reuse that thicker section. Mine is in perfect shape, it is just the over-window area that has hardened up badly.
These seals cost $400 shipped. I figured even if I scrapped them, Id only loose $400 (or perhaps could sell them if I waned to go OE down the line), and for now, I'm ahead $400. Not as well off as had I just bought OE seals, I guess in my head, but still, if these work out and look OK, Ill be happy. I was thinking the seals from MB were more like $500 each.

Roughly 45" long for the rears and 47" from the front. I only sampled one of each, so no guarantee of each being the same, and it was kind of rough, I put the measuring tape along it reasonably straightened out, but not perfect...

how long were your real ones? any comments from experience on "threading" them into the channel and pulling versus "flexing" them in along their length?

I still have my orig ones... not too bad of a shape. But sooner or later I'll likely splurge on the OEM pair.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I'd really like to know how these seals worked out for you.

Holding up just fine - though the car doesn't get much UV.
If the prices on the other page are right, $390-ish each, I'd probably go OEM. I might at some point anyway. Why? Because the Thai seals do not include the funny front part by the outboard mirror. And while it seems to fare a bit better than the rest of the seal, they still do get dry and crack. So it's highly valuable to get that part renewed as well in any CD worth keeping. Mine stays garaged for the most part and the section is waterproof, but at some point I'll probably get the real ones for peace of mind for the future. No complaints with the Thai ones... Just that they aren't 100% complete for a car worth keeping. With a good offer, and assuming the MB ones are roughly the prices on the other page, I could probably be convinced to sell mine...

Thanks for the feedback.
I'm starting to make a list of all the things that need to be refreshed on my CD and those pieces seem like the most expensive parts--last I checked, it was something like $650 from Mercedes for each side. Mine are cracking in a few spots and there's a 1/2" gap where the rear window part joins the front window part. For now, I put a short piece of fuel tubing in the channel just to keep water out. So it's a stopgap, but something's gotta give. When you installed your new stripping, did you use an adhesive to keep the pieces joined? Or they just butt together and stay together because they haven't shrunk? |

No. There was signs of some sort of a light adhesive being used in there, but since I wasnt a pro/fast installer I didnt do it. Its probably something like 3M spray adhesive put in there right before pressing in.
They fit tight but are straightforward enough to install. I did have to cut them to fit, though hinestly I forget how I did it. IIRC, the rear portion goes down and can hang in the open area behind the track, so you leave that, and then can just cut the other portion as needed. But that may not be the case. Regardless, it was straightforward and self explanatory when I did it.
