How many 1987 300TD's left?

Being a new 1987 300TD owner, I was just curious your thoughts on how many of these rare wagons are still on the roads; that haven't been wrecked, parted out, rusted away, flooded, etc. Since there were approximately only 1500 wagons imported that year - How many do you think still remain?

Give your best educated guess in this poll

I just cant see only 1500 of these wagons imported... there's got to be more then that. if it's that rare i'm proud to say I have a well running, rust free example of one however

There was an '87 300TD wagon turquoise/tan in Phoenix, AZ on E-Bay about a year and a half ago. It had about 60K miles, and was nearly perfect.......it's high-winning bid was somewhere around $22,000.00.

Yes, they are coveted - the big question is.....what condition and miles are on a 23 year old E300TD wagon?

My first thought is "How the he!! would we know"?
My second thought is that 1500 has GOT to be a bogus number. No way that is accurate....

**edit**
Well, after reading what comes below, that number might be allot closer to correct than I would have thought. Interesting.........
Good article below too.

That is the number I keep hearing from different people and sources. If that is not right I would like to know, and will change it.

The guy that had my car last was 85 yrs old and I don't think he knew how rare it was. He let it go to a charity auction for free because it was becoming too much to maintain. The guy I bought it from got it from the charity.

I have been told by the motor registry my 250td (I think its equivalent to a 300td 2.5 non turbo) is the only one in Australia. The original owner privately imported it. The motor registry went into melt down when it was first registered here. They had no listing for it. As far as they were concerned no such model exists.
All good now though. There are a few gasser 124 wagons and 190d 2.5 sedans about so no probs with parts. It is often cheaper to get bits from the USA or Europe/Middle East than local.
I am surprised that you cant get motor registry numbers on how many of any model there is.

These diesel wagons could possibly be the most useful vehicles ever made, roomy, comfy, more useful third seat than my big SUV, nimble, powerful etc. I can fit more stuff in my wagon than my SUV or truck bed.

Thumbs up

Well only around 5500 300SDL were built for the 1987 MY from what I recall, so 1500 could be possible. I almost NEVER see the '87 wagon, I have seen a white one and a black one... and I have seen some weird vehicles on the road.

I bet there are well under 1000 on the streets.

What is odd to me is that there were more SDL manufactured for the '86 MY but I very rarely see one, let alone for sale. Explain that.

E300TD has nothing do with badges, it's for nomenclature and differentiation between the variants... think outside the box, like MB engineers do/did.

Just got one

I just picked one up a few months ago in southwest Ohio. It needs a LOT of TLC that I haven't gotten to yet. Body is rusted out near the jack points. Paint has sun damage. Needs new brakes (made for an adventurous drive home), new right rear shock (totally blown), some SLS work, and new motor mounts. And that's just from the initial going-over. Oh, and the best part was that I lost a right rear wheel bearing on my way home...

But, the motor was apparently rebuilt around 2000 by MB. Maybe that makes up for the laundry list of work it needs... or maybe I'm a fool. Either way, these are indeed rare vehicles, so I jumped at the chance of owning one.

Anyways, it should be a different beast to work on. I'm only familiar with w123 wagons (I love mine). Now I have perhaps two of the most reliable cars ever made.

Cool article, 2386 units made in Germany.....how many imported to the US? I've never seen a 4-matic diesel around.
