Several people have already done this mod and ended up killing their engine when the hose broke off on the freeway. Do some searches on here to see the gory details. I believe it was the combination of heat, high pressure and vibration.

(For 617.952) What I can remember is that 2 that damaged their Engines were people that bought their Cars with the hoses moded by the prior owner and left them on instead of changing them. Also they did not have the 15mm hose on them.
2 Oetiker clamps on each single end of the Hose should work as well as the origina crimped collar. I have those on the Oil Cooler end of the Hose. I would have used them on the Oil filter side but I left the steel tubes installed and there was no room for the clamp crimping tool so I used the double norma clamps on each of the oil filter side hose ends. I find it difficult to believe that with 2 clamps of either type the hose is just going to slip out. Also even on the stock hoses when they got older from what I have read the hoses have always seeped oil before they came off. Anytime you have a the hood open get a flashlight and take a look at that hose ends for leakage. The size of Oetiker Clamp I used is 24.1 as in the pic.

What I was thinking of doing is buying the replacement part and then cutting the metal tubing in the middle of a straight section near the front. Then make a matching cut on the existing tubing and mate together with a 3" section of 15mm hose. That way the pressure wouldn't be pushing the hose off anything. Has anyone tried that? The mod I am copying with this idea is the one with the fancy coupling. I just don't see the need to put a compression fitting on it if I can get a seal with a hose.

On the oginals that came on my Car the end barb had a larger diamenter then the rest of the barbs on the metal fitting. The one in the pic seems to have the same sized hose barbs.

Too many threads running. Read this one
Oil Cooler Line Alternatives I agree w/ Diesel911 that Oeticker stepless ear clamps should work fine, plus look professional. Indeed, any quality screw clamp for AC (Breeze smooth, or ones w/ locating finger) would work fine since AC runs ~300 psig vs ~50 psig oil pressure. AC barrier hose also works since rated for hot oil. I used AC ferrule clamps just because I have a Master-Cool crimper, so looks very close to factory design. Cut the new upper hose 1" longer (i.e. 15"L hose) so it better clears that evil p.s. belt. Sure, you can booger w/ the metal tubing (weld, compression fittings, ... ), but not needed and messes up the factory design.

This saved me a few @$#$%%$@Q words and headache. I have a 300td euro wagon with A/C and your method worked. I did not even have to remove the radiator, just the brackets! Thanks again. |
