How to get kill?

I was reading this UK paper a few years back. A guy was killed by his own car. He parked the car just in front of a wall. He was standing in front of it and hooked up an auto starter. He pressed the button and, guess what, the car was in gear. The car crushed him to death. This is a true story.

May be we need to drive automatic.

Helping a friend pull a motor with a home made crane that he borrowed. Got the motor up in the air and one of the legs failed. The motor almost missed my friend. Had to drive him to emergency room for 26 stiches to close up his chin. He didn't save any money borrowing stuff not made for the job.

Nah, we just need to pay attention to what we're doing when working with things that are dangerous.

That much being said:

A co-worker was doing a brake job on a HMMWV. She removed the caliper bolts and promptly dropped the caliper on her chin. Several stitches.

Another co-worker removed a large hydraulic valve body from a D7G, which he then proceeded to drop on his foot. Of course, the valve body landed right behind the steel toe of his boot, and broke one of his toes.

I still have a scar on the back of my right hand from when I scraped it on something while changing a water pump on a HMMWV.

I got a black eye once by working on the car when the honey-do list was already too long.

When I was working on my axles this past winter I had to use my leg to pump up the floor jack. I had my wrench under the car so I crawled under the car and got my wrench.

From there I started pushing the floor jack up while holding up this wrench and bolt.

I didn't realize how hard it is to pump up a floor jack with my foot. I pushed as hard as I could ...

And I broke a sweat.

(Hehehe)

Not exactly a diesel but..

I built a SBC powered Jag. I was just putting the finishing touches on the tuning of the carburator. I had the( badly adjusted ) parking brake on but left it in gear. I got out to adjust the idle mixture a little, bumped the throttle ever so slightly with my knuckle and ran the tire up onto my foot. Since I then could not move as the car was up against the garage wall AND on my foot, hurting like hell, I couldn't reach the shift lever of course, and I couldn't go forward, I was effectively trapped there. As luck would have it, after yelling for a couple minutes my neighbor came running over and put it in to reverse and saved me,hehe. I ended up with a badly bruised foot. Pretty stupid. The other thing was, I was gas welding a patch on a fender rust hole. I needed more hose so I pulled on the torch. Instead of getting more hose length,I pulled the lit torch right onto my hand and at over 2000 dergees burned the area between my thumb and fore finger to a 3rd degree crisp about the size of a quarter. That was 30 years ago and you can barely see the scar now ,hehe. Those were the only 2 times I've ever been hurt working on cars, other than badly skinned knuckles.

... working under the car with only a jack supporting it...
jacking up a car with a floor jack and having the parking brake set...
working on ramps with the transmission in Park with the parking pawl as your only means of keeping the car still... and taking off the driveshaft...
opening the ball joints without supporting the lower control arm...
disconnecting the crossmember without supporting the transmission...
I just learned my former boss who trained me in automotive mechanics died last year working on his own car in his driveway... he was crushed by the car... no specific details yet, still waiting a return call from his widow...
everybody please be extremely careful working under a car ok?

banging my head....

just today.....getting on the forklift (diesel) in a hurry and banging my head on the overhead protection. Time to hang a ribbon down from it, so I'll lower my head before climbing into the seat. Yeah, I was resting my knee (doctor's orders) and working on a diesel engine at the same time. I was using the forklift to get the engine back into its storage spot.

How about lifting a very large john deere motor out of a motorgrader with a 20 ton hoist from the lifting eyes provided on the engine then having the lifting eye break engine fall and bust two fingers .

New motorgrader Lift eye was cracked. Friend pulled his fingers out before they got cut off. So even when all precautions are taken Murphy's law can still get you.

And Renntag I know the feeling only instead of molten metal falling on my arm it kept on going . Right between my tucked in shirt and my ......Willie nelson can sing loud .

For all that think a good looking woman can get your pants off fast .... Its not even a close race!
The word pain does not due justice describing the feeling!!!!

Note : untuck your shirt before welding overhead !!!!!!!!

Not diesel, but I have a set of scars on the back on one hand that match, perfectly, the teeth on the flywheel ring gear from a 172 cid Ford Industrial engine.

Some years ago I pulled the DIESEL engine from my F250. I had the engine crane on a sheet of plywood because of a lip between my garage and driveway. As I had the engine coming over the radiator support, one of the legs slipped off the plywood. I grabbed a 2X4 and set the leg back up. What I failed to notice was a very slight pendulum swing of the engine, very slight. Again, the leg slipped off the plywood--it just happened to be exactly in sync with the aforementioned pendulum swing. I grabbed the 2X4, but at this point the leg was hovering ABOVE the plywood. I stuck the 2X4 above the leg and tried to lever it back down. The 2X4 snapped like a dead twig. I took about 3 QUICK steps away from the engine, and allowed the laws of physics to have their way. The engine passed over the RF fender, just grazing it ever so lightly before the whole assembly, engine and crane crashed onto the driveway. Busting the oil filter and one exhaust manifold.

Many many years ago, I was checking the source of a belt squeal on a non-diesel. I was wearing gloves and my hand got too close to the belt and got sucked in. My right index finger got sucked into a pulley. Luckily it was just the tip and it came out quickly.

Boy, did that hurt! I calmly shut the car off and went into the apartment. I lied down on the couch and came very nearly to passing out.

When I was a teenager, I worked in a shop where we repaired Vac-Cons. I was under an L10 Cummins putting the oil pan back on when a bolt (pretty hefty one) that I thought was in a few threads dropped from a couple feet up and smacked me high on my cheek bone. I was wearing safety glasses, but it just missed them. I still have a scar today.

I have learned to not work, when tired.

Not worth the risk.
All kinds of crazy things when your wits are encumbered by fatigue.
