anyone ever switch to a GM alternator in place of MB one

I am very interested in replacing my 300SD alternator with a GM alternator for more amps. That way I go from M-B 13.8volts and 55 amps to a GM's 14volts and 100+amps so I can run some extras.

I know i have heard about it being done but need more information...

GM one wire?
OR
GM wire connector style?

thanks in advance

Should be a 65 amp in there, I believe Bosch makes a 80, and a 115amp, see this thread . . . "Alternator" 115 Amp Bosch AL129X works in 123s!

Seems silly to me.

A perfect fit is the 143 amp Bosch alternator. You can buy them used for $75, throw a new brush/regulator pack on it, use your old pulley. Wire lead connections are different. You'll need to upgrade the harness to get the power up to the battery (ie bigger wires).

DaveM has done them and has great pictures on his website.

Slighty off subject. But, I replaced my Volvo Alternator with a Delco back in the 1990s. Oddly the origional Alternator was an SV Alternator; not a Bosch.

But, it does not have the complicated Alternator Bracket that the Mercedes does.
Also I has never been entirely lined up correctly and the tensioner is kind of jury rigged. I have to replace the belt a min of every 2 years. But, othewise it has been functional

So if you are handy fabricating brackets and can get the Pulley to fit correctly any alternator there is room for ought to work.

DaveM http://davem.com/ website is apparently under re-construction.

I am thinking he might already have the Delco and the Delcos are cheaper at the Junk Yard and there is a lot of information on trouble shooting them and rebuilding them.
I found one of those Saabs that had that alternator in the Junk Yard and some one had already cleared the way for me to pull it. Sadly, I found that some how the Forklift had made contact with it when they moved it and bent the Pulley and even the shaft.

Yes. I have run a GM 15SI 108 Amp on my 300SD for a year and 1/2. I had 2 Genuine Bosch rebuilts fail within 1 year and that was enough. The Delco unit will fit right in the lower bracket (be sure to take up any space with washers ... I had to use 3, so be sure it is tight) but the upper bracket will have to be fabricated. I just found a bracket in the boneyard and was fortunate enough to be able to bend it slightly and it works great. You will need to change the pulley to a double groove if it has a single grove now. Connect the current indicator light wire to terminal 1 on the regulator (that's the one nearest the battery terminal of the alternator).

The 15SI was used from the early 80s through early 90s. Cadillac, some Buicks and some Oldsmobiles used it with a double pulley as did most of the GM Diesels. The real beauty of the 15SI is that it has a "Delta wound stator" so it is capable of charging 50% of its rated output at idle. No more dim lights at the stop light. Good luck, it is a worthwhile conversion.

There was an alternator/starter shop in Ft Lauderdale a few years backthat could supply a Delco alt with many variations of mounting ears, may very well still be doing it> i have no idea where they were getting the castings but we used alot of them to replace the crappy Motorola units that came on Cat marine engines at the time, direct bolt on fit! I am sure whatever parts they were using were available to any rebuild shop at the time and may very well still be. Don

For the 61x style motors? I do not see how they will fit, unless you are speaking of the 10x/60x style... then yes, I have installed 143A in both of mine.

I put a 115A in my SD, purchased it new from Eagle Auto Electric I believe is the place.
