An all Mercedes Saturday

Today I planned to work on the my car. I woke up to my street filled with cops. seems its a code enforcement weekend, they were checking all the cars for their registration. this apparently took 4 cop cars. anyway, they asked about the Mercedes sitting in my driveway with the bumpers off and the license plate off. I said it was registered, but the plate was in the house. they said it was ok, but the code enforcement people my want to see it. I figured I'd work on the car till they showed up... we its 1am and no enforcement people lol

Oh well I got a lot done on the car. gen 2 side molding installed. bumpers installed. I'm quite pleased with the results. my car needs to be washed. sitting in the driveway the last month its gotten more dirty then when i drive it

here are the pics.

Next step EXHAUST!

Here is the old Y pipe dual exhaust and the new 3" exhaust... it needs some work, but thats what tomorrow is for.

I helped turbobenz get his kidneys gone.

Code enforcement?????? What is this place coming to? It is a sad day when we live in a place where we are judged by the cars in our driveway. Hehe, if we had code enforcement here in NC, I am afraid they would be met by a bunch of rednecks and shotguns. - Good ole Americana, if ya know what I mean.

looks like you are coming right along with the SD. Did you paint it? I thought I read you were, or did I have a Vision last night .

So the police Natzis haven`t got anthing better to do than to screw with law biding people, sounds about right.
My bro in law lives in Livermore, and you will get a citation if your wheels are off the edge of the concrete driveway, on the grass/gravel/dirt etc... strip between his property and the neighbors. now if it is paved with concrete, asphalt, brick etc.... it is ok . These Government people don`t have enough to do this is all a bunch of

When is the Norcal drive? maybe when this crazy rainny season is over?

first time I have seen turbobens in long pants.

not surprising when the state of CA is so broke. A saturday code enforcement sting operation probably made the state a number of thousand dollars. NY has started pulling people over for even 3-5 mph above the speed limit for the same reason.

Exactly what I was thinking! If they tried that here in Texas, well, let's just say there'd be some government jobs opening up...

Is CA like NY where all cars owned, no matter how decrepit, have to be titled, insured, and registered with a plate?

When I used to live in the midwest, you could title the car in your name without registering it and just pay taxes on it, but it was basically an honor system, since you could just have the PO sign the title, and resell it without being connected with the car. The state would lose out on the sales tax of that transaction, and you could sit on the car forever if the title was also undated. Sounds like this is how it is in NC and TX.

In NY, it has to have a plate, and must be safety inspected with the correct sticker if you dare to go out on the road. The insurance can lapse and the sticker is not necessary if you are not driving it, but that plate has to be on there, and it has to match the owner and address.
This way, you have to pay the taxes on the car for every transaction to a new owner. There is also a cap on how may cars you can sell in a year before you have to have a dealers license, and a fine for that too if you are a dealer in fact, but not in name as seen by the state.

They have done stings here too, where they will run the info on a car with no plate or a suspicious or wrong pate in someones yard, and impound it or slap you or the PO with a big fat fine for not registering it. This way, the state makes absolutely sure it gets a piece of the private owner sales transaction.

These regulations certainly cut down on my private auto traffic activity. I used to buy crappy cars as a hobby, fix em up a little, and sell them for a couple hundred more on craigslist. Now that is more difficult unless I have a barn where I can stash em, which I don't.

Here is Calif. they don`t have a yearly safety inspection, but gassers do have to have their smog check done every other year, and I think if it is sold, the prevous owner has to pay for it at the time of sale.

I have been out of the gasser loop for so long Iam not totally up to speed on it.

when a car is sold, the PO signs on the back of the title, then sends in to the DMV a card to remove liability incase the new owner doesn`t take of the paper work and then has an accident etc... keep PO out of trouble.
new owner then goes to DMV or AAA and takes care of the new registration, sales tax transfer fee etc...

If you decide to not drive a vehicle, you still get the yearly registration fee sent by the state. even if you don`t drive it, you still have to pay or do a non-op with them. I have one non-oped, still get the yearly registration sent, but don`t pay any fee. use to cost $10 a year, then was dropped more than 8 years back. when you do decide to put said vehicle back on the road, you have to pay that years total registration, no prorate here.

now if you decide to park a vehicle andnot drive it and decide to not pay the Registration, then do put it back on the road, you have to pay all those years back reg plus a fine.

Iam surprised Calif. hasn`t started a seperate safety inspection program just for the revinue. they don`t mess with the Diesels yet, or my older ones or even check to see if the Diesel hasn`t been swapped to a gasser.

Charlie, yep thats my Rustolium paint job on the molding! lol

Yeah the cops here arn't to bad, but I'm never surprised when they do stuff like yesterday. The code enforcement guys never showed up. but from what the cop was saying they were looking for junk cars with no redge, that can bee seen from the street. glad the old ford is behind the gate in the back yard lol. It has its non op paperwork here at the house, but god only knows where the plat is, its in a box somewhere.

The nor cal drive is still on as far as i know. the details are kinda not working out... there is no place to meet in Rio Vista. Justin, iwrock, talked to the chamber of commerce and they said they would supply us with a parking lot, but wanted to know our numbers. Idk what the plan is. we need a roll call and if its only like 10 of us lets just meet in the safeway parking lot and leave from there.

I had an all MB saturday too! Put new shutoff valve on the IP, and all new shocks, and swapped in the next rear tex seat from our parts car on my dad's '82SD.....next week it gets all new steering equipment and the front tex seats swapped in. Then it only needs an alignment and it will be just about perfect!

The other way of looking at it is how successful they are at doing law enforcement !

Having time to check plates on private property must mean there are no outstanding criminal warrants, that ALL the drug dealers are in jail, that all the parolees and those on probation are performing correctly... at least for starters.

Holy crap i'm glad I don't live in CA That just sounds like a complete violation of privacy to me. Code enforcement....that gives me nightmares just thinking about it and I do my utmost to keep my car in prime condition. So let me get this straight....you live on what looks like a culdesac and the police were basically going from house to house looking for broken tailights and such?

I still want to have a meet at my house... Its not that much further and we wouldn't have to deal with anything. I also know all the best driving roads up there and the hills are absolutely amazing looking in springtime. We could have a bbq going and everything. I think it would be cool to roll two dozen old mb's through downtown pville at some point in the drive
