went out and bought an 07 ML320CDI

Well, The 98 E300 was traded in on a 2007 ML320 CDI. I'm sure the dealer gave me way to little for my car and charged me way too much for the ML but thats the way it goes when you just have to have something. I loved the E300 but I need a 4 Matic. The ML is great but I just found out that the OM642 has a diesel particle filter. I also found out that no one makes a kit to remove it like they do for the Chevy, Fords and Dodges. Question is: how often does this thing regenerate itself and how do I know when its doing it ? Any other thoughts on the OM 642 ?????

Thanks,
Scott

Congrats!

What did you get for the '98 E300 on trade, and how many miles were on it?

33,700 miles on it, dealer only gave me $7500 for the E300. It was a 98 with 160,000 miles on it. needed tires, sun roof didnt work, climate control stopped controling the climate, had a bad air leak that needed creative starting technics. I could have fixed all that but It would have cost time and money and I dont know that I could have retailed it for $9500 any how so I let it go.

I'd say they gave you very fair $$$ for the E300 with the problems listed.

I think you did well. I would have done the same deal.

My '99 E300 may be going away in the same manner too - if I run across the preowned CDI or Bluetec on an MB dealer's lot.

I know you're enjoying your new MB diesel! Thanks for the details, from a former fellow E300 turbodiesel owner!

I am enjoying the new ride. I am concerned about the Diesel particle filter which came out in 07 and the bluetech came out in 08. These engines are not as alternative fuel friendly as the older diesels. The DPF filters soot and burns it off when the filter is full. Its a MPG robber and must go.

Good luck fooling the computer when you remove the filter. The CDI's are computers with wheels and an engine, especially the 642 powered cars. I would leave it alone until at least 50k to keep your warranty.

We went with the 648 due to its proven track record and less emissions equipment. The all aluminum 642 hasn't proven its longevity yet in my opinion...another reason why we went with the good ol' straight-6 cast iron 648. Unfortunately there isn't a choice in the ML...

I would have prefered a straight 6 also but I needed a SUV. I am really happy with the milage. on long comutes through back roads i average 50 MPH and 28.3 MPG. On the highway at 70 MPH I can get 26.3. Its only supose to get 25 MPG. my overall average is 25.7. I still have a year of warrenty so I will leave things be but I hope a DPF delete kit will be available by then. its the same engine as the sprinter and the Jeep Cherokee. I really miss the black smoke when I step on the go pedal.

Amen to that. I need a car payment like I need a hole in the head but I am really happy with this vehicle. My old E300 had heated seats and seat position memory and the right mirror went down when in reverse. I wouldnt have missed that stuff if I never had it to begin with. Its easy to get spoiled.
