Thinking of busting loose glow plugs on 606. Should i?

Working on my friends 606 -- delivery valve seals, fuel leaks, misc stuff.

I'm wondering if i should try breaking the glow plugs loose. I've read how these glow plugs can break off. They look a bit old. Have some rust on them. Not much though. Car has 176,000 . Its a 1995 E300D.

I've hit it with PB blaster last night and this morning. I definitely don't want to pickle this engine right now. Don't have time to fix it. Just thinking of doing the next owner a favor. She's going to sell the car probably. Plus we can brag the glow plugs were done and what a big deal that is in case buyer might read this forum

Should i try it? How much force? Just a quarter inch ratchet first? Or should i just leave it be and put intake back on?

She's going to sell? Forget doing the glow plugs. Period, end of discussion.

thanks chris. I think thats what i'm gonna do. These glow plugs are that bad huh?

I see you have same car. I just fixed fuel leaks at delivery valve and some hoses. What do you think? She has 176,000. Body in great shape. No rust. Do you foresee expensive trouble in future for her? Or if the glow plugs get done, is she good for another 100K with this engine?

She wouldn't want to sell but this car but doesn't need high maintenance expensive to own car.

I suggested she sell since parts are expensive on this engine and do fix anything is

I don't like how they replaced metal fuel filter fittings with plastic ones. Also computer controls and this engine looks much more complicated then the 602. So i suggest she sell and get a W124 with a 602 2.5T or a VW Jetta. But she's not getting mine , which is her twin car. She can have the jetta.

They are unbelievably easy to break off and might do so without giving you any warning. I broke three of mine before taking it to a shop to have the head removed.

Klann has got a lot of good stuff, but nothing for the 95 606 as far as I can tell.

You made the right decision. It may have gone smoothly. If not the blame would have at least subconciously fell on you. Even if you had quoted breakage was a real possibility.

Normally human nature because your time was cheap. The friend may have said do it anyways. After a breakage the mental profile seems to rotate with most people. With an insistant friend telling them your bill to change the glow plugs might be 2500.00 would have stopped it I imagine.

The owner would not like to have to pay to remove the head etc. Those glow plugs can be a real snake pit. Never ever attempt to change them for a friend. This is a very poor design of plugs and head in combination.

A good tech with the right extraction equipment may be cost effective on this series of engines. Unless a set I was changing backed out very easily I would farm it out. I hardly never farm out anything of a mechanical nature either.
