Yep. My bad, I sometimes forget about w126 diesels. I'll delete my post.

What are you putting off? Is your cable going bad, etc?

No, I no longer think that the cable is going bad. I think I lost at least one cable attachment point.

This means that when I pull the release handle, it is not pulling the latch, but the cable is moving.

When I pull on the hood release handle in the cabin, there is no "tonggg" sound. It just lifts up. I've adjusted the cable already. I have a new cable that's just sitting....

Hmmm...All I can tell you is that I replaced my cable after the hood would not open, and even with a new OEM cable I still don't get a "tonggg"...

My old cable was still intact. I probably could have adjusted and lubed it up, but I preemptively replaced it for piece of mind.

Please . . .

Would it be possible for someone to post a picture of the front left engine compartment (a W126 (circa 1983)) showing the hood latch release cable?

This would let me see how it is routed and attachment points.

Pretty please?

My TD had a chunk of coat hanger coming out the grill when I got it. and there was no "tonggg" sound even after I replaced the latch pull. What did it was a liberal 'squirt down" (latch area) with PB Blaster, I got the "tonggg" sound now

I had a similar problem. Your cable is probably not the issue, your latches are full of dirt. I took mine off, which took about 10 minutes, cleaned them in gas, dried them off, and sprayed clean lithium grease.

It makes a definitive "pop" when I pull the latch.

may sound weird, but check the pull end of cable and lever assembly. Most are prone to the "pivot" pin under the actual lever either bending on the casting or completely severing. This may be the cause; it would not allow the cable to be pulled completely. This has happened on two cars that I know of (mine) ;o>
