W210.020 E300 Diesel 1996-1997 steering question

Would anyone know if an inner tie rod is to be considered still good it should feel pretty firm while moving it around when disconnected from the wheel? Should it be able to stand up on its own horizontally?

I'm asking because my current one will not and in fact its pretty loose but its not sloppy when quickly moving it around, Im just wondering if I should wait a few days while the parts come in then replace both the outer and the inner. My intent was only to replace the outer's as the indie shop recommended. I would much rather just slap the outer tie rods that I have and be on my way. I just want to be foolish.
