IT RUNS!

Got everything put together today. Filled the motor with 400 Delo, transmission and power steering with Mobil-1 synthetic ATF, and radiator with Zerex G-05.

- Cranked for about 20 seconds
- Started up, smoked for about 20 seconds
- Idles really nice!
- Does not knock like it used to
- After I ran it for 15 min, I checked the oil and it was still clear (!)

The only thing is I don't know where to connect the RPM sensor, so the RPM gauge is kind of all over the place.

There is a box (bottom right) that looks like the pins would fit there, the holes in it are are numbered 1 through 6... ?

Video time!

Here it is. Genuine 1st time start of a rebuilt OM617. I did not know if it will start, or even if it will crank, or anything. My wife just said "I have to film this", so she did.

Here is another video of the motor idling

Here is the "before" video. You can hear the deafening knock

The next project is:

My 240D has blue smoke on cold startup and idles rough for the first 30-60 seconds on cold starts too.

I am thinking new valve stem seals, rebuilt+balanced injectors, all new glow plugs and maybe even delivery valves in the IP, those are all easy to replace.

Maybe do a compression test before I even get started.

Very cool. It's a great feeling having them fire up after tearing them down and reassembling. How many $$ went into the rebuild?

Thanks for all the kind words guys!!! I couldn't've done this without all your expertise and support, and that is god-honest truth!

WHERE does the wire from the RPM sensor go, though?

Oh, and the cost of the project. I've been carefully avoiding totaling the receipts up, but I will do that later this weekend, so, stay tuned.

Nice Job konstan!

Regarding the RPM Sensor (Crank Position sensor), plug in which the wires go into probably disintegrated, they usually do when old.

It will plug into where the tach amp is located. Basically plugs in the bottom where the 3 pins (near the fender) on the base.

Yesterday I sat down and totaled up all my receipts. I will not bore you with each individual receipt but I do have it kind of by category here

Car - $340
Brakes - $300
Engine parts and gaskets - $900 (this is pretty much everything - rings, pistons, injectors and balancing, etc)
Receipts that I may have missed ~ $200

So the approximate total is $1800 more or less

it's the closest I'll ever come to owning a new car

I have a 1982 300D which JUST started to make the knocking sound, which is there pretty much only at idle, and especially louder when cold. The motor was replaced, and has about 250K.

Anyway, this is what led me to this forum, and ultimately through your 'Knocking sound' thread, followed by the engine rebuild part 1 & 2 threads.

It seems a rebuild is way over my head as I don't have the time, nor the garage/ tools. I have a good mechanic (freelancer) who likes to rebuild and restore. Charges $50/ hr. Wondering if it will be worth the cost in time and parts for me to bring to him. Any estimates on that total?

I do appreciate all the posts and input by all. Great community!.

Regards.
