240D question
I just changed the fuel filters on my 240D and the car started on the first crank after I primed the system using the hand pump. I let the car sit and idle for about 10 min. and then took off for the freeway. I drove it about 10 miles (to get the oil good and hot before I changed it) and then the problems started. As I was getting off the freeway, I noticed that the car wanted to die at idle. I had to keep my foot on the pedal and keep the rpms up (during stop lights...etc) while I was trying to make it home. I made it home and I noticed that the car did not want to idle at all.....kept wanting to die out. But, if I started it up and kept the pedal down while cranking and held the rpms at around 1500-2000, the car would run fine. Any slower than that and the car would start to stall. I let it sit for a little bit and went back to see if it ran any better. Well, as of last night it was running fine....even at idle. So, my question is:
Did I still have some air in the system? What was causing this problem? How can I prevent it from happening again when I change the filters the next time? I found out where my oil leak is and I am sooooo happy. It is coming from the joint between the oil filter housing and the block. I thought it might be from the rear main seal as oil was dripping off the bell-housing. The filter housing is also leaking at a "plate" where the pressure guage line connnects to the housing. Has anyone replaced these gaskets? Any advice. Thanks for the input. mike |

Replaced the filter gasket last summer. First be sure to wash off the engine so you can see what your doing. I used both a regular type allen key and one I bought that fits a small rachet. You might as well plan on changing the filter and oil at the same time. Be careful when working from the top those little vacumn lines beaking real easy. Those screws may be very tight as mine were. you should sure to use a fairly new allen key
good luck

I'm needing to replace that same oil filter housing gasket. What size is the allen wrench needed? (Just too lazy to check it out at the moment.)
Thanks, |

Bill,
I'm pretty sure that it's 5MM, but it might be 6MM. Good luck, |

I've posted the procedure for R&R'ing the gasket between the oil filter housing and the block. There are actually two of them you'll need. Do a search and let me know if you come up with it. If not, I'll repost it.

When changing the gasket, what kind of sealant is best to use? Also, what is the purpose of that "metal plate" on the side of the housing by the pressure guage line? There is a leak there too as well as at the joint between the housing and the block.
As a side note: I replaced the return lines and that helped a lot with my diesel leaks at the injectors. However, I still have a couple of very small leaks at the base of two injectors. Are there gaskets that need to be replaced? Do I need a special socket to take out those two injectos? mike |
