3/2 Way Valve Delete
Hello all,
I have a 1984 300sd. I've been chasing some harsh shifting (particularly at less than 1/2-3/4 throttle) and other vacuum issues (slow locks, etc). I also have my EGR vacuum line blocked with a BB. I have replaced the completely worn-out plastic toggles on the 3/2 way valves (under black box on valve cover). When I did this, one of the valves was busted apart, so I reassembled it. I think these valves are leaking, because the shifts were a bit softer after replacing the toggles and reassembling the valve. Rather than paying $50 for a new 3/2 way valve, and since I've disabled the EGR anyway, I'm interested in bypassing the valves to see if the shift harness subsides. Which hoses to I jump to which? Thank you, Jack

I'd also like to know this. I'm chasing some second gear start problems. I can manually shift to first and takeoff, but would like to fix it.

Here is a pretty good explanation for the 617 from Brian Carlton:
EGR elimination, 617 engine However, I don't believe this will apply to the '87SDL.

3/2 Valves on a 1984 300SD are only used for the EGR, so eliminating bad ones should improve shifting.
If your 300SD doesn't have the vacuum transducer (blue flying saucer), than this should give you an idea which lines to block/remove: The top one is the most important. The bottom one could even be left in place. |

So I want to remove those two lines, not just block them off?
Thanks Jack

It's probably easier to just remove it all than block it off. A capped line can become a vacuum leak down the road when the line or connectors degrade.
The 3/2 shouldn't affect your shifts. Ditch em'

The three-way connector below nr. 65 can also be replaced with a simple (two-way connector). These connectors are rubber lines, can be bought per yard/meter at a good car parts shop or the MB dealer. Simply cut off a piece of the desired length. Always handy to have, because these connectors are used at a lot of places and they can dry out. |
