240D = 3:69 Differential, with that low gear you will have fast get up and go. on the top end, the engine will be screaming, you will max out. Find a 3:07 out of a 82 - 84 300D and maybe the SD used them also. the 85 used the 2:88.

Congratulations on your project.

I have the diff and I'm in line to get the speedo, but I don't know if I'll be able to get it in before I move. With the 3.69, it's not gonna be worse than the 240, right? And I usually only putt along at about 60 on the highway.

you are joking right? My hats off to you if you have this kind of self control, I can't do it. This might change with that turbo motor though.

Haha, no I'm not joking. I should confess that I sometimes get fed up and just start pushing 80, although that was usually in some of our other cars, as the 240 was limited in other ways besides my foot.

Err I bought new ones, and just went with the cheapest ones which are the same for the 240 and the 300.

Oh let me explain further. I meant to say did you use the w126 (617.951) motor mount arms? As opposed to the w123 (617.952) arms.

Oh, no I had to use the arms from the 240, they are different lengths.

OK since you are having no vibration issues, I was randomly thinking the engine was sitting differently. Hence the w126 arms question. But now you stated you are using the 240 arms, it still could be the case.

Alright, got the exhaust in. Ended up having to fork over $150 for a new downpipe, but the rest was free (although it did need a little bit of patching). Fits and sounds great. Fits on the stock 240 trans support, too.

As for vibration, it might be a little worse than the 240, but the difference is insignificant. I don't have any of the shake-your-teeth out vibes that some have gotten.

Now, I have not wired up the tach or the pressure switch thingy. I'm moving to college Saturday morning, which is a 3 hour drive. Do I need either of those hooked up?

Well, just my luck, swap finished, ready to roll, the clutch hydraulics give out on my. Completely unrelated, just awfully coincidental. I never even got her on the highway.

Some questions/concerns, though. If I'm driving along in gear and just pop it into neutral, it takes a while for the engine speed to drop down to idle. A good maybe 5 seconds, compared to the maybe 1 second for the 4-cylinder. Maybe the engine speed governor is set specifically for the auto trans?

The engine also is a little hard to start, it feels as if it might be losing the fuel prime, and it's a little smoky on start-up. Once it warms up though, it's fine. I found one of the injectors that I rebuilt to be leaking at the halves, so maybe that's it? I'm driving to school tomorrow (on petro-diesel, too nervous to start VO until I've run it for a while), so hopefully all goes well.

I also have not wired up the overboost pressure switch(?), the thing that is connected to the vacuum, between the intake banjo bolt and ALDA, I think. Nor have I wired up the tach or installed the diff. None of these will be an issue, right?

If I'm putting in the 240D auto crossmember, do I use the 240D auto trans mount, or the manual trans mount?
