turbo retro
Hello all,
I am new to this forum and feeling my way around. I was just scrolling down the list and came across a 1979 blue 240D and the member says it has a VGT Turbo on it. I thought all 240Ds were naturally aspirated. So my question is: Does some company make an after market Turbo for a 240D? Is this really worth installing if there is such a product? I never drove a diesel even before I rebuilt this one. The car was given to me by a friend who did not have the time to work on it. I was working on it for him when he decided to get married and move. So I ended up with the car and a lot of work needed to be done. The more I did the more I had to do. No sense in trying to half build an engine. So everything in it is new except the timing chain, cam, and the crank only needed to be polished. Testimony on how well these engines hold up. The car had about 340,000 when I starting taking it apart. It did have a major front seal leak because the person before used the wrong size keys that fit on each side of the crankshaft to keep it tight. Well I have to say except for taking off from a stand still 0-60 I have never owned a better car. I am now a diesel enthusiast. Still have some bugs to take care of but the engine seems to be running just fine. I have sightly oversized pistons in it 105 mm in place of the 99 mm but if there is a turbo I can install I would like to do this if the price is not off the wall. Thanks and I have plenty of bugs that need to be addressed so I will be back I will post a picture as soon as I can figure out how to do it. bluestein1 |

I think you might be thinking of ForcedInduction's car. It was a 240D but he put a OM617 into it and added a VNT turbo.
There have been turbo kits for the 240D over the years. Callaway, STT, AeroCharger and other have made kits, but no longer sell the kits. I think STT still has parts but no kits. There are a few people that have put a turbo on their 240D but not many. I have been driving with mine for over two years and close to 50K miles, and I have yet to have an issue with the setup. So it is possible but it is a lot of work and the gains are not that great. If I could I would put a nice VNT turbo on my car, but bills come before thrills.

You might want to look up the differences in the Turbocharged Engines and the non-turboed ones.
A lot of stuff inside of the Engine was changed to handle the Extra Heat and stress. Since you are now Hooked on Mercedes Diesels you might think about getting a turbocharged 300D at some point in time.

there was a factory turbo OM616 (rayjay?) available for a very limited time... not in the states though.
Try a little search next time. A variable vane turbo will certainly be a custom job. |

Thank you for the correction.
What is the member referring to in that link I posted? |

To the turbo 616 he has in his Tempo Gurkha which is produced in India. They also put a turbo 616 in the MB van (Tempo really--built on license) they built in India. I road in some of them in India in March this year. Nice engine.

Yeah, I think at that mileage, the timing chain would certainly need replacement, unless it was already replaced before you got it. I guess you checked the stretch and found it in specs.

I wish I could remember where or whom I heard this from. But the car has same chain in it since I rebuilt the engine and everything seems to be just fine. Starts up first time every time. |

timing chain
To my knowledge, which is quite limited, the timing chain seemed to be in good shape. These chains I read somewhere just do not wear out. I guess because of the chain tensioner.
Of course I am probably wrong but I have been driving the car for one year and she fires up first time every time. I did not know this before I rebuilt the engine, The timing chain just seemed to me to be in good shape. It is a double chain unlike my Dodge truck or Chevy truck which have just a single chain. Maybe because of this the chains do not wear out but they just might break. Maybe I was just lucky, I need all the luck I can get. Let me know what you think. If I thought the chain was slack then i would have replaced it but it just seemed fine. |

The man who did the work on my car installed a Rajay and the ones floating around for the last 40 years are probably his work.
As for turbocharging a 240D I think it was worth it 30 years ago but with replacement costs being about the same of equally accessible OM617 engines and parts I wouldn't sink the money or effort into it. |
