there is a propeller shaft dust boot that also disintegrated on my car, I'll have to go back in there and drop the shaft. of course on an SD you have to drop the tail pipe, the shaft cover and then the shaft to change it, so, it'll be a chore for a weekend with time to spare... if that ever comes...

This is what happens at 35mph when your flex disc gives out. The previous owner did this not me. And this is why I got my 240D for $500.
Imagine if the car was traveling 60mph. At 35 it tore out all the shifter linkages, broke the shifter arms on the shifter, bent up the trans mount bracket, destroyed the centering cone on the driveshaft, and tore some holes in the trans tunnel.

I wouldn't mess with that if I were you... unless you drive in the snow or something. The center carrier bearing is sealed so that boot only "protects" the part of the spline that is exposed.

I misplaced my boot when I did the 5spd swap. I just smeared some grease on the exposed spline. If I find the boot I will put it back on.. maybe

I anally replaced both flex discs, the boot, center carrier, and the bearing when I did mine. It has been trouble free for nearly 50k so far.

The 300E has a single tiny partial crack in the front disc, so it is up next for a full replacement of all above mentioned items. (yes I am obsessive)

I noticed the cracks last service of the car, and went on a 50mile trip, before parking it to fix... I got lucky, I did not know how bad the discs were, just knew they were worn. that front one was ready to go.
I think DG has a pictorial on a higher speed destruction of a joint... had to replace the trans tunnel, and plenty of other stuff... I did not want any of that mess.

Noob question. So are these things on a 560 SEL? And are these pretty much u-joints?

yup. the 560 has larger ones than the diesel model does, but same basic thing.

Same here. I replace the flex disc, center bearing and boot when I fixed it all originally and that was at 258k miles, and now I'm at 307k and everything seems solid thus far. Though I haven't been under there in a few thousand miles so Its probably about time I have a peek.

How do these parts look? The person I bought my 300SD from said these parts are all brand new. He said the brake master cylinder, axle boots, and flex discs are all brand new. What do you think?

P.S. Is it normal for brake fluid to run out of the master cylinder if you fill it above the MIN mark?

The master cylinder MAYBE, but the rest are now where near new.

I'd get those flex discs changed ASAP.
