I always forget about that return hose and end up with a mess somewhere... good for you.

the discrepancy would be around 18*

did you roll a new chain in?

Konstan,
A smart guy like you could do the maths !! 360/ number of teeth on the sprocket. Sounds to me more like you have the timing about right. Once its all back & has run for a while, you could recheck.

skipping teeth is irrelevant, to some degree. It only matters if the pump is mounted in some position that allows for a correction of injection timing...

and yours certainly is.

thats not entirely accurate.

on the crankshaft, the degrees of rotation for both the cam and IP timer are multiplied by two due to gear ratios.

Yeah so here is my math.

Camshaft sprocket = 40 teeth
TD sprocket (went out and counted) = 40 teeth
Crank sprocket = 20 teeth.

One tooth on either the cam or TD sprocket is (80/40) * 360 / 40 - because it has twice the # of teeth of the crank sprocket, so that's 18 degrees.

I am definitely not 18 degrees off.

I am going to leave it as is for now (unless y'all think that the 3 degrees off on the timing might've caused my original knock and the broken ring)

NO, old chain. I did put an offset key to compensate for stretch. Which probably moved the pump timing from 24 to 21, now that I think about it

The offset key will not change the IP timing. A couple of degrees on the IP will not cause broken rings. Chances are, when you get it back running & everything settles down it will be right.

I have a quick question, barring the IP, does the Timing Device have a relation to the crank and cam. For example, if the crank aligns at TDC and the cam sprocket aligns with its mark on the tower, does the TD have to be aligned to anything?

The timer has no relation to anything. The pump is installed on its own independent alignment.

I disagree. the chain wears evenly throughout, and the offset key only corrects the cam for the wear. you SHOULD have the IP retimed to get it exactly where you want it in relation to the cam.
