Concur on the statement that the vac pump does not work as hard when the vacuum system is tight. Saves wear on the pump.

With regard to timing chain wear/replacement, I just measured my stretch using the lift method and had 4 degrees stretch at 270k miles on my 617. I have complete records of oil changes every 4-6k miles since the car was new. I installed an offset key to bring the cam timing back to spec. Made a big difference in performance.

Mercedes Benz does not have a specified replacement interval for the chain. They would not have made the offset keys (up to 7 degrees, IIRC) if they wanted the chain replaced before that stretch was achieved.

I could use a new tensioner rail, however. On the project list.

Which Companies large Chain Tensioner Rails are the worst and which is the Best.

Meyle Chain Tensioner Rails seem to be the cheapest at around $18 + shipping from 2 sources I have found.

I am not sure when they went to the Vane type Vac Pump. There was a recent thread that had some info on that. Somewhere in the 1995-1996.

On the Diaphragm type Vacuum Pumps I also think when the hold Vacuum they are not working.
But, I have never had a Diaphragm type Mercedes Vacuum Pump apart or seen a good pic to be sure.
I know it is that way with the old Automotive type diaphragm Fuel/Vacuum Pump combinations back when they had Vacuum powered Windshield Wipers.

Is it just me, or are other becoming annoyed that "Meyle Germany" and "Febi Germany" seem to be making a lot of parts not in Germany and not telling you until it is too late, eg. Meyle engine mounts made in Malaysia, Febi subframe mounts made in Turkey, etc.

It annoys me that they make the word "Germany" part of the company name so that it's harder to tell where stuff's coming from.

I wonder if Lemforder is still making stuff in Germany.

D.

I bought a new Thermostat for my Volvo and the Box said Made in Israel; but, when I looked at the Thermostat it said made in Germany!

Despite the fact that the Box tells you to look on the item for where it was mad Bosch Oil Filters for my Mercedes are unmarked as to where they are made.

I bought 2 Gabriel Shock Absorbers for the front. One was made in the US and the other was made in Mexico.

What is the replacement interval for the chain and guides?
I have stopped checking timing chain stretch on any engine over 250000 miles, the labor/time is identical to replace the chain, the cost of a chain is cheap insurance, and it generally improves performance:

There is only one brand of timing chain to use.
