all the modern relays have 6 connectors. all the harness plugs have 6 spots for wires. if you have the Original relay still in your car, it will have the number of pins for the coinciding number of plugs, and plastic pins filling the extra spots. bottom line is, a relay with 6 conductors will work fine in a 240 or a 300 with fewer wires in it.

A 6-cylinder one will work, but it will not be able to properly compare the current draw so it will indicate a fault by not turning on the glow light, ... isn't that the reason the OP is considering replacing it in the first place?
Seems easier to just use an '87 190Dt or '90-'93 300D 5-cylinder relay for the afterglow mod, maybe I'm just old-fashioned?

Hmm .. this IS interesting! I wonder if I can retrofit a 5 cylinder to 6 then? Just use the connector of my 6 and get a used 5 cylinder relay ... these are easier to find for sure! ... I know I know ... I am just cheap

Just one problem with that theory: it isn't true.
