If it gets donated to a charity, I`ll be pulling parts off it at Pick N Pull. especially if it has sat for 10 yrs and doesn`t run.

after 10 years, will need tires, brakes gone through and most all rubber. maybe even ball joint and tire rod boots gone, and flex discs.

Probably have to clean the fuel system with it sitting out side that long. and all other fluids.

My point was as a gentle way to placate her if she is offended by what she might perceive as a lowball offer. Good manners cost nothing. "Go to waste" isn't really the words I would use, just the gist of the thought. More like, "Its a great car and I'd love to see it taken care of..." If she's held on to it for this long, most likely she does attach something of her dead husband to it - therefore she'd be much more likely to sell to someone who'd care for it, rather than just out to make a quick buck.

My Mom kept the '77 240D they bought new for nearly 20 years before it was donated to the St. Vincent De Paul society. It was garaged for years, then placed in the double driveway to give the appearance of someone always being home, purely as a security item for it's final years. Eventually, it just was getting in the way is why it got donated away. I was flush with my '83 300SD for years anyway, and didn't want it. Not really interested in having strange people come to the house to haggle and kick tires on a car that old and poor condition at that point. The car's mechanics were good, had approx. 350K miles on it, but it was a rust bucket. If the car won't start, even if it has a new engine as it sits, that does the seller no good in pricing it. But you never know until you ask, that's for sure. I hope it all goes well for all involved in this deal.

Where are the pics? Sounds awesome. The hard part will be selling it. Its hard to not feel like you are low balling but 1000.00 seems like a reasonable start if it actually starts up and drives ok. You're the one who has spent all the time researching and fixing cars and gaining the skills needed to turn an 800.00 car into a 5,000 car. They could do the same thing if they wanted to put out the effort. And you've had to drive past it for 10 years drooling at it -- that's got your name on it. If they were poor and needed help though, i would advise them on how to get the most money out of it and offer them as much as i could.

Be sure to start it from a jerry can of fresh diesel or siphon all the diesel out and put fresh in. Along with some Biocide like they sell at the boat stores -- Startron. That tank strainer is probably totally clogged by now.

My 81 240 came from a neighbor whose husband had died and who needed money. She was a basket case[the neighbor not the car] and was really unable to decide how much to sell the car for. I could not bring myself to low-balling her in her grief so when she finally said $1500, I bought it. 122k miles but it needed tlc.
Friends and neighbors can sometimes trump a great deal.
