What is wrong with me? Could the trunk seal really be this difficult?

Hi everyone, I have been searching for what seems like hours to find help with my dilemma. I replaced my completely worn out trunk seal with a cheap aftermarket one (Uro I think) earlier this year, and it still leaks, plus it allows water to get into the metal channel underneath and it is starting to rust. (I could have installed it the wrong direction.)

Anyway, I now have a new genuine Mercedes seal and want to take the time to properly prep the channel and then install it RIGHT. However, after searching the Mercedes service manual and doing an exhaustive search here, I cannot figure out which direction the rubber seal goes in the channel. As far as I am concerned, it can go in there 4 different ways. I am sure I will feel like a complete moron once it is explained to me, but if someone out there knows, please help.

Thanks,
Cory

You need to look at another MB and see which way is goes.

Not sure this pic will help much, but here the best trunk shot I have.
I believe one side of your seal has a square side. That should go into the chanel on the car. With the sealing flap pointing out of the trunk.

I would love to, but 123's are very hard to find down here...all the good ones were sent to the islands to be used as cabs years ago.

That does bring up a good point...however. If anyone out there that has a W123 with a watertight trunk and is feeling generous, a good up-close picture of your trunk weather-stripping would be more than appreciated here.

Thanks again in advance for any help.

with a new seal, there is a flap. that goes closest to the inner edge of the trunk.
pointing up. the pic posted shows a seal that has conformed to the closed trunk lid position, you can see in the lower right corner of the trunk the edge pointing up, but curled over.
you want to treat the channel with por-15 to seal it totally from rust ever collecting there again.
the seal needs to be glued in. I used 3m yellow adhesive. they also have a black adhesive. it's a pain to install, and get it in right.
I recommend totally installing the seal, then closing the lid on it and let it sit that way overnight, then opening the trunk, and slowly lift out one corner at a time and apply the sealant, work your way around the seal, and it should be ok.

Thanks!

Thank you everyone so-far. I am definitely happy with the replies, the picture was also very helpful, thank you BioDiesel300TD.

Vstech, I would like to paint the entire channel with POR 15, just got the starter kit yesterday. How would you, or anyone else, recommend I remove all of the old, hardened weather-strip adhesive from the channel so I can properly prep it for POR 15 application? I was thinking paint remover/stripper?

NONNONONONONONO!!!
unless you want to paint your entire back half! stripper is nearly impossible to clean up out of that channel.
I'd use a wire wheel, or one of those composite wheels, and just hit it with a drill.
