With all of your experience you are asking us?

Come on shouldn't the question be "does anyone want to buy it?"

Put in bold, two mutually exclusive statements.

I'll run away from any car that has water ingress, there is no avoiding the fact that this is a sign of an owner who isn't prepared to do even basic maintenance, or, it is simply rusted out to the point it is a Fred Flintstone car.

Depends on where you live. In the wet UK perhaps this is true. Certainly not the case in Arizona or Colorado. Not sure about NC since it's generally more humid there.

Question VSTECH - JOHN

To get to answering your Q, I would have to know the extent of damage done by the existing water leak, and, if it even could be sourced to remedy.

You may be looking at a very nice parts car, a low-end daily-driver, or a somewhat high mileage gem. I would have to depend on your expertise to take it further on that determination.

We all would like pictures at some point though, if it becomes your's.

ok. gotta retype my answer because this page dumps text windows on page back/forward clicks... ick!

anyway, the car owner thinks it's worth 1500. "low" mileage in his mind, and runs excellent according to him.
this part of NC rains a lot, so water collecting could easily be from the cracks in the window seals he mentioned. it could also be from rust in the battery drain area or other places. I'd have to totally inspect it if anybody wants the car after that.

I got really busy today, and did not have time to see the car today. I'll go look and take pics based on the value's you guys are throwing around.
I didn't think the 240 auto had much resale value today.

I don't buy cars to sell... the cars I have accumulated are nearly all parts cars that I got amazing deals at purchase time.
I will get absolutely no money from the purchase and I have no interest in the car at all for myself.
so, no. I don't have any idea of it's value, and I have no "commission" to make on the sale. I"ll put anybody who wants the car in direct contact with the seller if they want it.
I'll post it in the for sale section after I take pics. it sounds like a minor project car to me. and if anybody wants an auto 240 it'll be there.

I dunno, I think it depends on where the water's getting in. If it's just the trunk, that could be OK.

I'd warm it up, pull the breather hose, cap it with my thumb and count the seconds until the engine stalls ... and offer $100 per second.

Ok, UPDATE!
I went by the guys house today, and looked it over.
VERY nice car.
there is some rust on it, in the trunk below the antenna. no place else. I crawled around the trunk, nothing. the floor is clear, the hood area totally free of rust.
my bet is the antenna since it's sitting 4" up from trunk.
also, the hood has flung up and dented both sides near the window.
the driver's hinge is broken, I've got a parts car, so non issue.
customer was not home, so I couldn't start the car, but he assures me it's a good running and shifting vehicle. we'll see.
He's replaced the a/c system, and of course it's a manual control system so it all works, we'll see.
the car has missing clear in several areas. otherwise the paint is flawless.
no rust in the suspension at all. bunt wheels.
new wallmart 49 battery.
palomino interior, stiching torn in the bottom driver's side. otherwise fine shape.
manual sunroof, manual windows.
the front manual windows are wedged up, so something is up with the regulators or the bolts or something... again, I have a parts car, so non issue.
it's ivory paint, palomino tex interior.
several cracks in the dash.
anybody looking for a nice condition 240D automatic would be happy with this car.
the water has to be coming in from the front windshield seal, it's weathered in the upper corners, so it's likely weathered in all the corners.

IMO: $800.00 as is, if it runs/drives nice...

I guess the question now is, how well has it been maintained. At that age you should expect the weatherstripping to be going (which it apparently is) and any other rubber boots, bushing, etc. These are the kinds of things that end up costing lots of time and money. If it really does run well and regular maintenance has been performed, then you might be looking at $1K.
