Kerry, then something is wrong here, It's getting dark already but just so you'll know there is rubber T coming out from the middle of the valve then the two rubber ends ends go different ways but I could not tell you right now b/c I'm not sure. Here is another picture -- again, Kerry thank you so much!

Hard to see but it looks to me like you are on the vacuum control valve and not the shut off valve. Shut off valve is way down on the back of the IP between the IP and oil filter housing.
There is also a vent to atmosphere associated with the VCV so that might answer your earlier question about a vacuum line not going anywhere. It typically vents inside the firewall. VCV is also supposed to slowly bleed off vacuum so that would be normal if you were hooked to the VCV.

I think I know now where it seats and is adjencent to the vacuum control valve, there is that thick brown vacum hose that goes to the steering mechanism (as you may suspect I am no mechanic but thanks to this forum and the help of you guys I've been able to fix a couple of issues!) This weekend there is good friend of mine that is a mechanic and will probably have the knowledge that I don't have to help me out even though he is not a MB diesel guy -- he also offer to have the engine oil and filter change and the same with the tranny. Can you tell me which oil is the best for my 84 SD 148k and the same for the tranny? what weight? I can buy all this at fastlane. And last but not least would it be difficult to change the gasket where the valve sit, I've have read that it is also good to adjust them...thanks so much guys!!

You'll get many responses to the oil question. I use Rottela-T 5-W40. At least use diesel rated stuff.
Any Dexron III ATF is fine. A valve cover gasket swap is pretty easy and yes, adjust the valves while you have the cover off.

Thanks again Kerry! I have a friend that I'm going to go see on Saturday to change the oil, tranny and filters and possibly the adjust the valve since I want to replace the valve cover gasket. I would hope that he could help me with the engine not shutting off and if I have good vacum etc, I am going to print a copy of the entire thread so we can go over it. I'll touch bases soon!!! Have a great day!!

Get 3 meters (6ft) if you can b/c there are a pain in the rear to replace speaciallt the # 2 & 3 in between the niple and the valve cover gasket, you can also give it a little more slack if necessary.

The engine not turning off is usually a vacuum leak somewhere - like the door locking system etc. Diesel Giant .com has a nice vacuum system DIY troubleshooting pictorial in thier maintainence section Joseph |

That would make the wall thickness 0.65 mm.
The I.D. is 3.2, see pics.
