Multiple questions about 1992 300d, please answer what you know

Ok I have a few Issues I need some assistance with since I go the car back on the road. Here's whats been done to get it running: 92 300d still not running questions about alda
All of these issues are accompanied by the fact that the car shifts into top gear by 20mph resulting in very slow acceleration with no downshifts.

The first issue is that when I first start the car when its cold, it starts right up and idles super smooth for maybe 45sec. Then is starts to "surge" for lack of better terminology, and begins to put out thick white smoke until the car warms all the way up, which leads to the next issue I will address next. In the video you may also notice that once it starts to surge, the shut off lever bounces alot. Here is a video that shows what it does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0nr8YsrSv4
Any suggestions on what to check next would be appreciated.

The second issue is that once warm, it shudders at idle. For instance I will rev it to 1000rpm and let off and it will fall slightly below idle and shudder alot, then come back up to 600-650 and lightly shudder. Here is a video that slightly depicts what it does. Watch as the needle falls, as it very slightly bounce maybe a mm or two before halfway smoothing out. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlzT2iAmXrY

The third issue is that today there is a faint glow behind the majority of my warning lights. And yes head lights are off, and still glow. As you can see in this video, when I put on the brake it actually fully lights up. Along with my headlight warning light which is on because the fuse is blown. Heres a video that is hard to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc6u5EyZWDw

The fourth issue is trying to figure out where these vacuum lines go that arnt hooked up right. This is right in front of the air filter box on the passenger side. Here is a pic of the last one that I have no Idea where it goes:

Hello,
That looks to be one of your crossover switches. Control the vales that control the EGR or Turbo.

You'll want to do the turbo wastegate swap. Wastegate actuator swap for OM602.962?
Why you ask. Cause it will do away with all the stuff on the left side of the fire wall under and behind the air filter holder.

You'll not need to sort out the rats nest. It will cost about 100 buck but will be well worth it. Also you'll eliminate the EDS (computer from the equation) The computer will only control the idle rpm.

Speaking of idle rpm. Sounds like you're also having a problem there. The EDS controls the idle rpm. Some more info:92 300D 2.5 won't idle on cold start, low idle speed on cold start

Your car has issues for certain.

It looks like the temperature display stays on/displaying with the key off, is this true? It should not, and it is possible that someone has crossed a switched and un-switched wire, the usual place would be a radio installation. Try unplugging the aftermarket radio if there is one. I wouldn't think there is an aftermarket alarm, so is/was there a remote start?

On the idle, disconnect the vacuum line to the shutoff valve, see if the lever stays up properly. It should not bounce and is likely causing some of your problems. There was a thread on failing shutoff valves somewhere.

My return to below idle has always been fuel filters plugging, but if that is the case then the car will have no power at higher RPM.

OVP bad will in my experience give you no tach and an ABS light (have that problem today), I've had it several times on multiple Mercedes cars. Your problem might be related, but not classic symptoms, I'd look into that glowing thing first and see if you can find the crossover between the switched and un-switched. Could even be at the power antenna? Does it behave differently with the door open vs closed?

Check the "bowden cable" running from your transmission to the throttle linkage. It should pull out easily, and return easily on its own. A starting point for its adjustment is fully-extended at full throttle.

In the video the car is running, when the key is off the temp gauge does go out. As far as radio goes, I have removed it and reinstalled months ago and this started just a few days ago randomly.

Both of my fuel filters have less than 25 miles on them.

I have already replaced fuse in ovp, and that made it actually stay running, but should I replace the whole relay??

I will check the shut off lever when the car is cold, as it will only do the surging when its cold. And only drops below idle once warmed up.

Bowden cable is next, but i would like it to run right before touching anything else.

I hate to say it, but I have been nothing but disappointed in this w124. My 83 is a pos and if I had to decide what I was driving on a 1000 mile trip tomorrow, it would definitely not be this car, and I wouldn't second guess the 83.

So how far is Circleville from me (just in case you really get sick of it)?

Seriously, I hope that it gets straightened out as it is truly a joy of a car to own once sorted out.

I agree with your decision to not muddy the water with more changes (the bowden cable), something that many of us are guilty of.

Hard to say what the cause is, but the bouncing shutoff lever isn't normal. If removing the vacuum line changes it then you know that it's in the ignition switch/valve. The glowing I didn't really get, but it sure seems like something in the ignition switch might be not all of the way on or off.

I've been to ne indiana a few times for a vw show. And btw once this car is sorted out i have full intentions of selling. As far as the vacuum lever i can't try the test because the car is not running again!!! It's not charging at all, and i think the glow.i've had lately is from my battery light that has been on but must not be in he socket all the way... so i am now goig to start checking out the charging system. Who would know what else could go wrong.
