OM602 - Diesel around injector nozzle and gas escaping
I noticed a new sound to the om602 in my '86 190d 5-spd the other day - a pffht, pffht, pffht, of gas escaping. And there is a little diesel escaping the #4 injector at the head. I previously had this problem on the om601 in the '84 190d I owned before (this along with engine oil being splattered on the inside of the hood), and just pumped a bunch of black silicone gasket sealer around the injector to fix the problem--probably not what the pros would recommend as a long term fix.
I'm guessing the seal is broken on my #4 injector at the head and a new threaded ring or crush washer is needed to fix the seal. Is this something I should attempt (I'm a reasonably adept mechanic, but use the car as a daily commuter, so need it running every morning), or should I leave this to the experts at my shop? |

Or, leak around the prechamber, or your injector is not torqued in right...
If you flood the local area with diesel you can better see where the bubbles are coming up from.

... my bet is on a bad or dirty heat shield.
pull the injector, clean the threads and seat well, and put in a new crush washer and torque to specs! see if it fixes it.

ditto A new threaded ring will not fix it if the PC is leaking. Removing the Prechamber and reaming the head to seal a New one is not something most people would feel comfortable doing. Try a new washer, as suggested, before anything else. You can certainly do this by yourself. For the leaky injector: if its leaking from the center of the body, crack it open and tighten up a few times without dissembling. |

If this is the case, re-tighten the injector body while it is mounted in a bench vise, not in the car.
