Anybody use a water separator?
I think I got a batch of fuel with some water in it. The car ran like crap and then wouldn't run until I emptied out a bunch of fuel and replaced it with fresh.
After 2 tanks, it still starts like crap. I have to keep the throttle up until it all cylinders kick in and it smooths out. Has anyone put in a water separator and if so, what brand/model?

RACOR brand is what I've used.
Your "problem" sounds more like bad glow plug(s) than anything.

Not the glow plugs. I know what bad glow plugs are like. I've lived with continually replacing bad glow plugs on my SD.
This sound and feels very different. More likely the injectors now. Even with the engine warming up, at idle it sounds much more knocky. Not the smooth, quiet, firing I used to have.

You may have a secondary filter 1/2 full of water & the paper all covered in mud. Low primary fuel pressure = runs like C##P.

X2, I got a bad tank once on a trip from Ft Worth to Houston. I ended up having to dump half the tank and refill. I finally got it all out of the tank and the car still ran poorly till I had a chance to replace both filters when I got home.

I've replaced that filter several times, but it maybe it is filling with water.

The inside of that filter would be interesting to see. I changed mine when I first got my car. Now that 30k miles is nearly up, it is almost time to change it again. Runs just great but better safe than sorry so I plan to change it on the MB schedule.

Just changed the filter on my OM603 and plan to cut it open for kicks and grins.
Good advice.

Where'd you get the fuel? Not Meijer's I hope...
The stock filter should be able to catch some water. I've seen the Racor setup installed on some VWs, it's a nice filter. They make them with a clear bowel at the bottom so you can see if it's catching water. -J

Unfortunately, there is no way for "the MB schedule" to predict when your next bad fill-up is going to occur. That puts spare filters in the same category as spare tires.

It was a station that used to be a BP. They have either covered or removed all their BP emblems. I don't know where they get their fuel now.

I have big honkin filters on my diesel ram. Seldom does a significant amount of water drain out. The SD has a much more tolerant injection pump than the Ram's infamous Bosch VP44. Fuel filters &/or Startron have always solved any SD fuel problem. Perhaps attributable more to good fortune than good fuel.
