What I was told is ,that when the engine starts and starts moving the coolant around in the block that a sudden surge of cold coolant could cause the powerd heating element to fail. So I was misinformed?

I just assumed the coolant would be warm from the block heater being on.

Probably just another way of looking at it I guess. I usually unplug them before starting the engine anyway.

I don`t need one here on the Monterey Bay, but there are places in calif you better have one. like truckee,ca. that is one cold hole.

3. Light a match, drop it on the briquets, and slide the trash can lid under the oil pan.

I may actually have the details slightly wrong... for some reason I think he used liquid oxygen, but you get the idea.
I think you left out.

1. call the fire department and tell them you are about to do something foolish. When the calls come in, they'll know where to go.
