Thinning the herd

Which one would you let go?

2002 VW Jetta TDI 125K (Mine)
2001 Volvo XC70 122K (Hers)
1995 Volvo 850 Turbo 220K (Kids)
1992 Ford F150 4WD 242K (Wood getter)
1983 Mercedes 300D Turbo 240K (new cruiser)
1965 Corvair Corsa 96K (Fun car)

The wife says we have too many and need to think about thinning the herd. Only one I would says is off the table is the F150 (I use it around the property too much)

Just trolling for opinions.

Glenn

Clearly, the wife.

I think this would be my serious order of operations. All of these are listed in order of "start with 1, and try the next only if the previous failed"

1. Put forth a heroic effort to persuade the wife that it really isn't too much. Prove that it's coming out of disposable income if it is. Put forth the case that you need backup vehicles for everyone in case the primaries all fail. I would even go so far as some carefully planned sabotage on one of them just to drive the point home.

2. Sell your VW if you have confidence in the 300D as a replacement for it.

3. See if you can get the kids interested in adopting the 300D. If they are, sell their Volvo.

4. Decide which you love more, the 300D or the Corsa, and sell the other if you must. Beg to be allowed to de-register it and place it in dry storage instead. This costs nothing as long as you have room to store it and then you can wait for times to get better.

The reason I say that even though I know that anything from the 60s has got a lot of memories and stories and attention and funds and collectibility tied up in it, from a purely functional point of view it sounds as if those two are the only non-essentials.

By the way, VERY much joking about the "wife" suggestion. That would be foolish on a lot of levels, and it wasn't a serious option.

define the kids part of the 850... I worked on one recently, and dislike front wheel drive transverse engined vehicles... difficult to change parts on etc...

The wife is not an option, (although it was a passing thought when she mentioned thinning the herd )

I agree the 850 would be a prime candidate.

Yup, that's probably the weakest link in the herd.

maybe lose both the 850 and the 83 300D and trade up to a TD wagon, either another 123 or get an 87TD (harder to find, but awesome to drive)

Yep. 850 and 300D appear to be the candidates.
I guess kids could take over the 300D and sell the 850.
300D appears to be option two.....

I'd get rid of the Jetta and the 850 - both are trouble waiting to happen in my opinion.

Glenn
Without a doubt- either of these two

Volvo 850 Turbo- turbo issues especially if the operator just cuts the car off without letting it idle for a minute. It will cook the bearings.

Volvo XC70- Ball Joints and front suspension issues BIG TIME

If you have enough property to have a truck dedicated to specifically maintaining it, why can't you move the cars somewhere where she can't see them? Out of sight, out of mind.

I bought a rabbit off a guy up in NH once who had this wonderful piece of property around his house, about 5 acres out of 20, but over a knoll beyond some trees, he must have had 15 or 20 fire trucks sitting up there among other things. He told me that his wife could not care less as long as they were not visible from the road or the house. That was the deal he struck when they were married, especially since, unlike a lot of people, he was mostly interested in collecting extremely large, old municipal and emergency vehicles for some reason.

Pretty neat though, he had a city bus from the 20s and some other historical stuff
