"Hi Performance Noise" ??
I have an 84 300tdt that recently developed a noise coming from engine exhaust or turbo that changes depending on engine speed and in the car it sounds like a Nissan 300z. Anyone know what that could be? Thank you

Maybe you ran over a ricer and it's still stuck under the car.
Maybe an exhaust leak? Can you track it down with the car standing still? |

Unfortunately I don't have a Nissan Z car handy for comparison purposes. You'll need to describe the noise in more detail
Whistling sound? Sound like a 'fartcan' exhaust tip on a Honda? Burbling sound? Rumbling sound? High-pitched sound?

If its a whistling sound check the tube between the air cleaner and turbo to make sure it is not cracked and is still installed properly/tight, otherwise you are sucking in unfiltered air. On the other side of things, inspect the whole exhaust pipe, especially near the turbo and down/flex pipe.

Weird, my car just started doing this. I have a leak either at the manifold or the downpipe. I was able to trace it by starting the car cold then pulling on the throttle linkage a bit while it was still running rough so it would smoke. Sure enough, I got smoke coming from near the firewall on the pax side. It's either at the manifold or the downpipe (probably where the flex pipe is). It isn't hard to troubleshoot. Good luck.
BTW, if it's the manifold gasket leaking, the repair sucks. It's terrible. Not looking forward to it.

Sound like a Nissan 300Z, that's funny. But what is more funny is the trend around here. Seems stuffing whistles into the exhaust of yo big bad*ss diesel truck and overfueling them is all the rage... TWEEEEE!!! Hisss TWEEEEEEEEeeee!!! Hisssssssss and black smoke billowing with every short jab on the pedal. These trucks usually sit about 4 feet off the ground and are over decorated with "mean" looking trinkets and emblems. I notice on magazine racks all the material feeding this crowd.

Think about how easy they'll come off after only 6 months, which is about how long it's been since I replaced the manifold gasket!

Nice - that brings back memories - it came just after the oversized wheels and jacked up back end phase that went out of fashion quite quickly over here after the introduction of roundabouts!

This noise may be something loose and resonating inside the exhaust system as well. Almost impossible to guess when not actually hearing it.

I think some '84 turbo models had the ARV (air recirculation valve) - maybe late 84's had these. I remember these caused the whistling sound. Surely, '85 turbo models had these.
The ARV is on the turbo, and probably has a vacuum line going to it.
